Do not ask me about heaven, for I have nothing

    but descriptions and names.

It is something, and part of something, and at times

everything, and to some people, mere dust.

So the shepherd's heaven, as he wishes it,

    is spacious, green meadows,

wearing gold as a waistcloth and a sash

whenever Dhukāʾ, the sun, rises and sets.

Forever fresh: the grass never dries

there, nor does the water dwindle.

And to the mother from whom death has snatched

her sons, and from whom consolation has strayed,

it is a place where no wrong can befall them,

    no—nor can death overtake youth.

And thus hope is born of despair

    when hope dies within hearts.

And to the poor man, it is a land beyond the

horizon, holding all that the poor desire.

He fears neither the wealthy man nor his savage dog,

    nor does anyone mock him.

And to the oppressed, it is a land like this

earth, but brotherhood has spread throughout it.

Justice unites its people in an ordered whole,

as a garment gathers threads together.

No weak person is enslaved, no strong person

is a tyrant; rather, all are equals.

    كُلُّ شَيءٍ فيها كَما الكُلُّ شاءوا

    Everything is the lawful property of all;

everything there is as all have wished.

And to the libertine, it is a land of swaying

fair-eyed maidens, where tawny wine flows.

All that the soul desires is permitted:

no rebuffs, no coldness, no refusals.

The greatest sin is a person's saying, 'This

act is a sin, and this is indecency.'

There is no boundary between goodness and evil

like the one the prophets wished to set.

And when there is neither chastity nor debauchery,

there is neither modesty nor shame.

Every heart has the heaven it desires,

and, if you wish, every heart is a heaven.

    Forms existing within our souls

are worn by actions and things.

Many a thing, unique as the indivisible atom,

has been multiplied by aims and whims.

    Whatever understanding cannot reach

exists just as conjectures would have it.
