أَبَعدَكَafter you? يَعرِفُknows الصَبرَpatience الحَزينُthe grieving one
وَقَدand indeed طاحَتlaid low بِمُهجَتِهِhis very soul المُنونُdeath
After you, can the grieving one know patience,
After you, can the grieving heart know patience, when death has ravaged his very soul?
when death has laid his very soul low?
The hand of Time struck you with its vilest arrow, and when you passed, even the treacherous one wept.
رَمَتكَstruck you يَدُthe hand الزَمانِof time بِشَرِّwith the worst سَهمٍarrow
فَلَمّاthen when أَنthat (linking particle) قَضَيتَyou died بَكىwept الخَأونُthe treacherous one
The hand of time struck you with its worst arrow;
It struck you while you were the beloved core of every noble heart, hearts that now resonate with grief for him.
then, when you died, the treacherous one wept.
Time held no vendetta against you, nor was there any flaw in your character to bring shame.
رَماكَstruck you وَأَنتَwhile you were حَبَّةُthe core كُلِّof every قَلبٍheart
شَريفٍnoble فَالقُلوبُso the hearts لَهُfor him رَنينُa ringing lament
It struck you, though you were the core of every heart
Rather, you possessed a pleasing nature, a temperament unmatched by any other.
that was noble—and hearts sound a lament for him.
You encompassed knowledge of hidden mysteries, yet remained beyond the grasp of mere conjecture.
وَلَمand not يَكُwas لِلزَمانِfor time عَلَيكَagainst you ثارُa blood feud
وَلَمand not يَكُwas فيin خِلاِكَyour traits ماanything يَشينُdisgraceful
Time bore no blood feud against you,
It is as if you exhausted Time itself with scrutiny, until its hidden secrets stood revealed before you.
and nothing in your traits was shameful.
You resembled the full moon in the brevity of your life, yet centuries could not forge an intellect like yours.
وَلَكِنand yet كُنتَyou were ذاpossessing خُلُقٍa character رَضِيٍّpleasing
عَلىwith خُلُقٍa character لِغَيرِكَfor anyone but you لاnot يَكونُpossible
Yet you possessed a gracious character,
It is strange how hopes live on within us, and how we, in turn, submit ourselves to them.
a character no one else could possess.
For our souls are nothing but captives, and our bodies nothing but prisons.
وَكُنتَand you were تُحيطُyou encompassed عِلماًin knowledge بَِلخَفاياthe hidden things
وَتَمنَعُand you prevent أَنthat تُحيطَshould surround بِكَyou الظُنونُconjectures
Your knowledge encompassed hidden things,
Nothing in this cosmos is enduring; just as the dwellings perish, so too do their inhabitants.
and you kept conjectures from encompassing you.
The snares of death have ensnared you, a loyal soul who neither betrayed nor deserved betrayal.
كَأَنَّكَas though you قَدhad already قَتَلتَyou slew الدَهرَtime بَحثاًthrough inquiry
فَعِندَكَso to you سِرُّهُits secret الخافيhidden مُبينُclear
As though you had slain time through inquiry,
Does the bier realize which youth it conceals? Does this grave know which young man it now guards?
its hidden secret was clear to you.
A youth in whom all forms of beauty were combined, displaying the very arts of excellence.
حَكَيتَyou resembled البَدرَthe full moon فيin عُمرٍlifespan وَلَكِنand yet
ذَكاأُكَyour brilliance لاnot تُكَوِّنُهُfashion it قُرونُcenturies
You resembled the full moon in your lifespan, yet
Some of his traits were like the lion and the moon; his nature held both lofty dignity and gentle grace.
centuries cannot fashion your brilliance.
Though the signs of youth were visible upon him, within his robes dwelt the wisdom of a sober elder.
عَجيبٌstrange أَنthat تَعيشَlive بِناthrough us الأَمانيhopes
وَأَنّاand that we لِلأَمانيto hopes نَستَكينُsubmit
Strange that hopes live through us,
Let no enemy gloat over our loss, for every youth is but a hostage to his own inevitable demise.
and that we submit to hopes!
O light of my eyes, you have drifted far from us, before our eyes could ever have their fill of you.
وَماand not أَرواحُناour souls إِلّاexcept أَسارىcaptives
وَماand not أَجسادُناour bodies إِلّاexcept سُجونُprisons
Our souls are nothing but captives,
Death hastened you away before you could say farewell, and you departed before your companion could bid you adieu.
and our bodies nothing but prisons.
You did not forgo the farewell out of disdain; you wished for it, but miserly Time did not consent.
وَماand not فيin الكَونِthe universe مِثلُlike الكَونِthe universe فانٍperishable
كَماas تَفنىperish الدِيارُthe dwellings كَذاso القَطينُthe dwellers
Nothing in the universe is as perishable as the universe itself;
Oh, how my heart cries for your mother, when the news of your death rings out after the long silence.
as dwellings perish, so do their dwellers.
And for the anguish of your distant brother, when the undeniable tidings finally reach him.
لَقَدindeed عَلِقَتكَensnared you أَسبابُcords المَناياdeath
وَفِيّاًfaithful لاnot يُخانُis betrayed وَلاand not يَخونُbetrays
The cords of death have indeed ensnared you,
The stars shall weep for you in the darkness, just as the tender branches weep for you in the gardens.
faithful, neither betrayed nor betraying.
Brothers you have left behind will weep, alongside a mother consumed by grief and a sorrowful father.
أَيَدريdoes it know? النَعشُthe bier أَيَّwhat فَتىًyoung man يُاريit conceals
وَهَذاand this القَبرُgrave أَيَّwhat فَتىًyoung man يَصونُit safeguards
Does the bier know what young man it conceals?
Our burning hearts shall never find relief from your loss, nor shall our tear ducts ever run dry.
And does this grave know what young man it safeguards?
The assembly of youths was adorned by you even as a child, just as a brow is adorned by a crown.
فَتىًa young man جُمِعَتwere gathered ضُروبُforms الحُسنِof beauty فيهِin him
وَكانَتand there were فيهِin him لِلحُسنىof goodness فُنونُforms
A youth in whom the forms of beauty were gathered,
You have departed with all the world's beauty, leaving nothing in this age to bring adornment.
and in whom goodness had many forms.
You were our hope, our true expectation, and you were our helper—now there is no helper left.
فَبَعضُso some صِفاتِهِof his qualities لَيثٌa lion وَبَدرٌand a full moon

وَبَعضُand some خِلالِهِof his traits شَمَمٌnoble pride وَلينُand gentleness
Some of his qualities were a lion and a full moon,
Do I seek consolation after you, O my brother, when both my left hand and my right have been paralyzed?
and some of his traits were noble pride and gentleness.
Calamity may be borne, save for one in my state over one like you—for this is a tragedy that cannot be eased.
أَماراتُsigns الشَبابِof youth عَلَيهِupon him تَبدوappear
وَفيand within أَثوابِهِhis robes كَهلٌa middle-aged man رَزينُsober
The signs of youth appear upon him,
Sorrow tears my soul apart for your sake, and for you, even my stubborn tears have yielded and flowed.
yet within his robes is a sober, middle-aged man.
My chest is filled with a grief that melts the spirit, and my eyes are brimming with scalding tears.
أَلاtake heed لاnot يَشمُتِlet them gloat الأَعداءُthe enemies مِنّاover us
فَكُلُّfor every فَتىًyoung man بِمَصرَعِهِto his death رَهينُa hostage
Take heed: let not the enemies gloat over us,
This affliction has left nothing of my heart intact; I can only deem it stabbed and bleeding.
for every young man is hostage to his death.
Tears drive slumber away from my eyes, and my eyelids refuse to part with their weeping.
أَياO نورَlight العُيونِof the eyes بَعُدَتyou went far عَنّاfrom us
وَلَمّاand not yet تَمَتَلِئbe filled مِنكَwith you العُيونُthe eyes
O light of the eyes, you have gone far from us,
My wakefulness has stretched on, my night is endless, and I know not when sleep will come again.
and our eyes had not yet had their fill of you.
It is as if the morning has donned the robes of darkness in mourning for you, and thus refuses to dawn.
وَعاجَلَكَand suddenly overtook you الحَمامُdeath فَلَمso not تُوَدِّعُyou bid farewell
وَبِنتَand you departed وَلَمand not يُوَدِّعكَbade you farewell القَرينُthe companion
Death overtook you suddenly, and you did not bid farewell;
May God reward you with all goodness on our behalf, and may abundant rains generously water your tomb.
you departed, and your companion did not bid you farewell.
وَماand not عِفتَyou shunned الوَداعَfarewell قِلىًout of hatred وَلَكِنand yet

You did not shun farewell out of hatred, but
you wished it, and miserly time did not.
فَياso O لَهَفيmy anguish لِأُمِّكَfor your mother حينَwhen يَدويrings out

Alas, my anguish for your mother when there rings out
the news of your death, after silence has lasted so long!
وَلَهفَand the anguish شَقيقِكَof your brother النائيthe distant one بَعيداًfar away
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle جائَهُreaches him الخَبَرُthe news اليَقينُcertain
And the anguish of your brother, distant and far away,
when the certain news reaches him!
سَتَبكيكَwill weep for you الكَواكِبُthe stars فيin الدَياجيthe darkness
كَماas تَبكيكَweep for you فيin الرَوضِthe garden الغُضونُthe boughs
The stars will weep for you in the darkness,
as the boughs weep for you in the garden.
وَيَبكيand weep أُخوَةٌsiblings قَدalready غِبتَyou vanished عَنهُمfrom them
وَأُمٌّand a mother تَأكُلُeats وَأَبٌand a father حَزينُgrieving
And siblings from whom you have vanished will weep,
and a mother who eats [as written], and a grieving father.
فَماso not تَندىgrow moist لَناfor us أَبَداًever ضُلوعٌribs

عَلَيكَover you وَماand not تَجِفَّdry up لَناfor us شُؤونُtear ducts
So never will our ribs be moistened
over you, nor will our tear ducts dry.
قَدِindeed اِزدانَتwere adorned بِكَby you الفِتيانُthe youths طِفلاًas a child
كَماas يَزدانُis adorned بِالتاجِwith the crown الجَبينُthe brow
Indeed, as a child you adorned the youths,
as the brow is adorned with a crown.
ذَهَبتَyou departed بِزينَةِwith the adornment of الدُنياthe world جَميعاًentirely
فَماso not فيin الدَهرِtime بَعدَكَafter you ماanything that يَزينُadorns
You took away all the world's adornment,
so nothing in time, after you, brings beauty.
وَكُنتَand you were لَناfor us الرَجاءَthe hope رَجاءٌhope
وَكُنتَand you were لَناfor us المُعينَthe helper فَلاso no مُعينُhelper
And you were our hope—hope;
and you were our helper—now there is none.
أَبَعدَكَafter you? ياO أَخيmy brother أَبغيI seek عَزاءًconsolation
إِذاwhen شُلَّتwere paralyzed يَسارِيَmy left hand وَاليَمينُand the right hand
After you, my brother, should I seek consolation,
when my left hand and my right have been paralyzed?
يَهونُgrows bearable الرِزءُthe loss إِلّاexcept عِندَfor مِثليone like me

بِمِثلِكَover one like you فَهوَfor it is رِزءٌa loss لاnot يَهونُgrows bearable
Loss grows bearable, except for one like me
losing one like you: that is a loss that cannot grow bearable.
عَلَيكَover you تُقَطِّعُtear apart الحَسَراتُanguishes نَفسيmy soul
وَفيكَand over you أَطاعَنيobeyed me الدَمعُthe tears الحَرونُstubborn
Anguish over you tears my soul apart,
and over you my stubborn tears have obeyed me.
فَمِلءُso, filling جَوانِحيmy breast حُزنٌsorrow مُذيبٌmelting
وَمِلءُand filling مَحاجِريmy eye sockets دَمعٌtears سَخينُhot
So my breast is filled with melting sorrow,
and my eye sockets are filled with hot tears.
وَماand not أَبقىshowed mercy المُصابُthe calamity عَلىto فُؤاديmy heart

فَأَزعَمُso I say أَنَّهُthat it is دامٍbleeding طَعينُpierced
The calamity has shown my heart no mercy,
so I say it is bleeding and pierced.

وَتَأبىand refuse أَنto تُفارِقَهُpart from it الجُفونُthe eyelids
Tears drive sleep away from my eye [wording uncertain],
and the eyelids refuse to part from it.
لَقَدindeed طالَgrew long السُهادُsleeplessness وَطالَand grew long لَيليmy night
فَلاso not أَدريI know الرُقادَsleep مَتىwhen يَكونُwill be

Sleeplessness has grown long, and long has grown my night;
I do not know when sleep will come.
كَأَنَّas though الصُبحَthe dawn قَدalready لَبِسَput on الدَياجيthe darkness
عَلَيكَfor you أَسىًin grief لِذَلِكَtherefore ماnot يَبينُappears
As though dawn had clothed itself in darkness
out of grief for you; that is why it does not appear.
جَزاكَmay He reward you اللَهُGod عَنّاon our behalf كُلَّevery خَيرٍgood
وَجادَand may lavish rain upon ضَريحَكَyour tomb الغَيثُthe rain الهَتونُceaselessly pouring
May God reward you with every good on our behalf,
and may the ceaseless rain lavish itself upon your tomb.
