أَطارَdrove away عَنّيfrom me النَومَsleep صَوتٌa voice فيin الدُجىthe darkness
كَأَنَّهُas though it were دَمدَمَةُthe rumbling الشَلّالِof the waterfall
A voice in the darkness drove sleep away from me,
A voice in the gloom deprived me of sleep
A voice in the darkness drove my sleep away,
As though it were the rumbling of the waterfall.
Like the roar of a waterfall
Sounding like the roaring of a waterfall,
يَصرَخُit cries out وَالريحُand the wind تُرَدِّدُrepeats الصَدىthe echo
فيin أُذُنِthe ear الفَضاءِof space وَالتِلالِand the hills
It cries out, and the wind repeats the echo
It screams while the wind echoes back
Screaming while the wind repeats the echo
In the ear of space and the hills.
In the sky's ear and the hills
Into the ears of the hills and empty space.

O night, pause a moment before me,
O night, pause a moment before me
O Night, halt for a moment before me,
You will see all creatures, and I will see the nights.
See the wilds and the nights I saw
That you may see the creatures, and I may see the nights.

أَناI am العاريthe naked one أَناI am الكاسيthe clothed one
I am the singer; I am the weeper.
I am the reveler, I am the weeping one
I am the chanter, I am the weeper,
I am the naked one; I am the clothed one.
I am the naked one, I am the clad one
I am the naked one, I am the clothed,
أَناI am الخَمرَةُthe wine وَالدِنُّand the wine jar
أَناI am الساقِthe cupbearer أَناI am الحاسيthe drinker
I am the wine and the wine jar.
I am the wine flask and the firmness
I am the wine and the cask,
I am the cupbearer; I am the drinker.
I am the walker, I am the perceiver
I am the cupbearer, I am the drinker.
خَلَعتُI cast off ثَوباًa garment لَمnot تُفَضِّلُهُfavored it يَديmy hand
وَهُمتُand I wandered فيin الواديthe valley بِلاwithout سِربالِa robe
I cast off a garment my hand had not favored,
I took off a garment my hand did not choose
I cast off a garment my hand never chose,
And wandered in the valley without a robe.
And I fancied myself in the valley without pants
And wandered the valley without attire,
وَخِلتُنيand I thought myself اِنطَلَقتُI had broken free مِنfrom سَلاسِليmy chains

And I thought I had broken free of my chains,
I emptied myself, I broke free of my chains
And I imagined I had broken free from my chains,
And my being had been freed from the mire;
And my essence escaped from the mire
And that my self was purged of the mire.
فَلَمyet not أَزَلI cease أَرسُفُI drag أَغلاليmy shackles

Yet I still drag my shackles,
I still exaggerate my shackles
Yet I still drag along my fetters,
And remain in the pitch-darkness of the impossible.
And I still hope for the impossible
And remain in the darkness of the absurd.
فَماso not أَبكيI weep مِنَbecause of الغُربَةِestrangement
عَنfrom جارٍa neighbor وَعَنand from خِدنِan intimate friend
So I do not weep over estrangement
So I do not weep for the estrangement
So I do not weep for an estrangement
From a neighbor or an intimate friend;
From a neighbor or household
From a neighbor or a bosom friend;
فَقَدfor perhaps يَرجِعُreturn جيرانيmy neighbors
وَتَبقىand remains غُربَتيmy estrangement عَنّيfrom myself
For my neighbors may return,
For my neighbors may return
For my neighbors may return,
Yet my estrangement from myself remains.
And my estrangement from myself remains
But my estrangement from myself remains.

By day I knew everyone approaching,
I knew everyone coming and going in the day
By day, I recognized every passerby,
And everyone departing, yet I did not know my own state.
But I did not know my own state
Coming and going, yet I knew not my own state,

The plains and hills were hidden from me
The plains and hills were hidden from me
The plains and hills were veiled from me
Beneath the darkness, as was the sea with its terrors;
By the gloom and the sea of horrors
Beneath the darkness, along with the perilous sea,
لَكِنَّماbut لَمnot تَستَتِرbe hidden آماليmy hopes

But my hopes were not hidden from me
Yet my hopes were never veiled
From me, nor my imperfection, nor my perfection,
Nor my faults or merits
From me, nor my flaws, nor my perfection,

Nor my weakness, nor my resolve,
Neither my weakness nor determination
Nor my weakness, nor my resolve,
Nor my ugliness, nor my beauty.
Nor my ugliness nor beauty
Nor my ugliness, nor my beauty.

How often I flee from myself,
So how I flee from my soul
How often I flee from my self,
Yet there is no escape for me from myself.
When there is no escape from myself
Yet I have no escape from me.

So I asked, “Who is this?” My companions replied:
So I said "Who is this?" My friend said
So I asked, "Who is this?" and my companions replied:
“A man tormented by obsessions, raving in his madness.
"A whisperer raving in his confusion
"A possessed man, raving from madness,"

He shelters in the thickets by day,
Who takes refuge in the bushes by day
"He seeks refuge in the thickets by day,"
As though he were part of the thickets.
As if he were part of the bushes
"As though he were part of the wild,"

And in the darkness his cries are loud,
And at night he has a loud scream
"And in the darkness, he screams aloud,"
As though he and the night were in combat.
As if he and the night were in conflict
"As if he and the Night were in combat,"

As though the night were binding him
As if the night binds him
"As if the Night were binding him"
With shackles and ropes,
With shackles and chains
"With fetters and heavy ropes,"

"With the whip of a cruel oppressor."

No one ever saw him without seeing him
Whenever someone saw him, they saw him
No one has seen him but that they saw him
With his gaze fixed upon the heights,
Straining his eyes toward the heights
With gaze fixed upon the heights,

As though he were watching a caravan ascending
As if he were awaiting an ascending caravan
As if watching a caravan ascending,
Or descending, though there is nothing but a mirage.
Or a descending one - nothing else
Or descending—yet there is nothing but mirage.

As though he feared for the crescent moon
As if he feared for the crescent moon
As if he fears for the crescent moon
And all the bright stars, lest they vanish.”
And the rest of the comets from fading
And all the stars, lest they fade away.

Then the voice cried: “What I hope for
The voice cried out "What I hope for in myself
Then the voice cried out: "What I hope for"
Is within myself, and so is what I fear.
And what I fear,
"Is within my self, as is what I fear."

However vast the horizon expands
"No matter how vast the horizon extends,"
My soul is the greater horizon.
My soul is the vaster horizon"
"My self remains the greater horizon."

It is not the night's grandeur that astonished me,
It was not the night's majesty that amazed me
It is not the majesty of the Night that awed me,
But my own grandeur that astonished me.
But rather my own majesty
But rather my own majesty struck me with awe.

Nor is it the beauty of the bright stars that bewildered me,
Nor was it the comets' beauty that confused me
Nor did the beauty of the stars bewilder me,
But my own beauty that bewildered me.
But rather my own beauty
But rather, I was bewildered by my own beauty.

If I feel a longing for union,
If I long for union
If I hold any longing for union,
Then my longing is only for my own image.
My longing is for my imagination
My longing is only for my own imagination.

I have draped myself in the morning light and the night,
In my joy and in my sorrow.
In my intimacy and grief
In my moments of solace and my grief;

The darkness did not increase my fear,
So the gloom did not increase my fear
So the darkness did not increase my fear,
Nor did morning light increase my safety.
Nor did the dawn increase my safety
Nor did the morning light increase my safety.

Both newcomer and emigrant and settler
The one who stays, the one who leaves, and the indifferent,

The ignorant fool meets
The ignorant fool meets
With the scholar in my palm,
The scholar in my palm
The scholar within my palm;

Whoever had a friend
He who has a companion,
And whoever had no companion.
And whoever was without a friend
And he who is without.

And everything of which someone said, ‘This is mine.’”
And whatever someone said to me
And every single thing for which a person said, "This is mine."

And the night had resolved
And night was about to spur on
Then the Night resolved
To urge its mounts onward with song.
Its steeds, so silence crept into the valley
To drive his riding camels onward,
فَسادَthen reigned الصَمتُsilence فيin الواديthe valley
كَأنَّas though المَوتَdeath يَغشاهُenvelops it

Then silence reigned in the valley,
As if death were overcoming it
And silence reigned over the valley
As though death were enveloping it.
I walked as dawn guided me searching
As though death had enshrouded it.

So I walked, with dawn as my guide, searching
In the forest, slopes and hills
I walked, with the Dawn as my guide, searching
Through the woods, the slopes, and the hills.
I found only a motionless corpse
Through the woods, the slopes, and the hills.

But I found only a fallen, lifeless man,
Lying near the waterfall
I found nothing but a lifeless, fallen body,
Sprawled beside the waterfall.
Nothing in his left hand
Cast down beside the waterfall.

Nothing was in his left fist,

There was nothing in his left grasp,
And in his right was nothing but dry clay.
And in the right, nothing but clay.
