You are nothing to me, nor are your two dwellings my desire.

Grief, longing, and thoughts have greater power over me.

And she was startled that tears overflowed, spilling everywhere,

No—not until she sees my liver falling to pieces from sorrow.

Where are al-Husayn and the slain among the sons of Hasan,

and of Ja'far and Aqil, whom a flood swept away?

The slain for whom the House and the Stone yearn,

with longing, while the verses and the chapters weep for them.

Al-Husayn died at hands that, in their wrath,

reached far against him, but in their compassion fell short.

    ودَرَّ دَرُّكِ مَا تَحوينَ يا حُفَرُ

    May no bounty flow for the enemies when they caused bereavement;

and may your bounty flow, O graves, for what you hold.

When they saw the paths of patience opening

toward a meeting and an encounter with mercy, they endured.

They said to themselves: 'How welcome a first draught—

Muhammad—and Ali after him, the return from the water!'

Come, in pleasure and ease, O family of Fatima,

to the pool of death; accept being slain, and endure.

    وعندَ رَبِّهِمُ في خَلْقِهِ غِيَرُ

    The pool is their pool, and the grandfather their grandfather;

and their Lord holds reversals of fortune for His creatures.

I weep for you, O sons of piety, and wail for you,

and I drink patience—it is bitter sap and aloes.

I weep for you, O two sons of the Messenger's daughter; let not

the seasonal storms and rain efface your resting place.

I have no time for Uthman, to mourn him,

nor have Abu Bakr or Umar moved me to grief.

Yours are Adi and Taym; nay, I add for you

Umayya; ours are the eminent leaders and the radiant ones.

Each day, remembering them drives my heart

into exile, and sends my tears on a journey because of them.

Death and slaughter, with skulls split open,

of Hashim's line, bereft of aid and victory.

It is enough that God's forbearance will take effect

one day; and God keeps watch over this creation.

Shall I forget Ali and the misguided men's disparagement of him,

while tomorrow the liar and the insolent will be known?

Who is it to whom the deserts and the trees spoke,

and whom the dust and the stone greeted when he called to them,

until, when the clans of Yemen saw

his proof, they believed after having disbelieved?

Or who won the prize reeds ahead of them

on the day of the Well, while their necks were bent awry?

Or who stood firm on the day of Uhud, sure of foot,

and at Hunayn and Sal', after they stumbled?

Or who went forth hurling aside al-Qumus's gate for them,

and conquering Khaybar after they were defeated?

Did not the Messenger of God stand to address them,

and say: 'This is your master, O people'?

Was it an upper arm other than Ali's that was being raised

by Muhammad the good—or do the asses not understand?

Leave off blundering in blind darkness,

where neither star nor moon has appeared.

The truth is radiant, and the signs are clear,

if only the haters' souls would believe, or they would look.
