كَنِسَاءِlike wives قَتْلَىslain men قَدْindeed خَرَجْنَthey came forth صَوائحاshrieking
Whoever wishes to liken anemones, let him say:
If one would liken poppies to slain women's cries
Like the wives of the slain, who have come forth shrieking,
Dressed in blood-drenched gowns, hideously arrayed
أُلْبِسْنَthey were clothed أَثْوابَgarments الدِّماءِthe blood شَنَاعَةًghastliness
ونَشَرْنَand they loosened شَعْراًhair ثُمَّthen قُمْنَthey stood نَوائحاwailing
Clothed in garments of blood, ghastly to behold,
With hair let loose, they stand lamenting, wailing aloud
And who have loosened their hair, then stood wailing.
