بانُواthey departed فصارَand so became الجِسْمُthe body مِنْfrom بَعْدِهِمْafter them
ماnot تَصْنعُmakes الشّمْسُthe sun لهُfor it فَيّاa shadow
They departed, and after them my body grew so frail
They are gone, and the body after them
that the sun casts no shadow for it.
Is naught to the sun overhead;
بأيِّwith what وَجْهٍface أَتلقّاهُمُshall I meet them
إذاwhen رَأَونيthey see me بعْدَهُمْafter them حيّاalive
With what face shall I meet them
How shall I encounter them
when they see me still alive after their departure?
When they see me living after them?
وماand what جوابيmy answer إِذْwhen تَقولُsay العِدَاthe enemies
ماnot صَنَعَdid البَيْنُseparation بِهِto him شَيّاanything
And what will my answer be when the enemies say,
What shall I say to their enemies
"Separation has done nothing to him"?
When they say the separation hurt me not?
ياoh خَجْلَتيmy shame منهُbefore him ومِنْand at قولِهِhis words
ماnot ضَرَّكَharmed you الفَقْدُthe loss لَنَاof us شَيّاat all
Oh, my shame before him and at his words:
O my shame that he said it,
"Losing us has done you no harm at all."
O my shame that loss of them hurt me not!
