ياO طَلْعَةًcountenance طَلَعَdawned الحِمَامُdeath عَلَيهاupon her
وجَنَىand plucked لَهاfor her ثَمَرَthe fruit of الرَّدَىdoom بِيَدَيْهاwith her two hands
O countenance upon which death dawned,
And plucked for her the fruit of doom with her own hands.
رَوّيْتُI drenched مِنْwith دَمِهاher blood الثّرىthe earth ولَطَالَماand so often
رَوَّىslaked الهَوَىlove شَفَتَيَّmy two lips مِنْfrom شَفَتيْهاher two lips
I drenched the earth with her blood, and so often
Love had slaked my lips' thirst from hers.
قَدْindeed باتَspent the night سَيْفيmy sword فيin مَجَالِthe sweep of وِشَاحِهاher sash
ومَدَامِعِيand my tears تَجْرِيflow علىover خَدَّيْهاher two cheeks
My sword spent the night within the sweep of her sash,
And my tears flow down her cheeks.
فَوَحَقِّso, I swear by نَعْلَيْهاher two sandals وماand not وَطِىءَtrod الحَصَىthe pebbles
شَيءٌanything أَعَزُّdearer عَلَيَّto me مِنْthan نَعْلَيْهاher two sandals
So, I swear by her sandals: never has the gravel been trodden
By anything dearer to me than her sandals.
ماnot كانَwas قَتْليِهاmy killing her لأَنِّيbecause I لَمْnot أَكُنْI was
أَبكيI weep إذاwhenever سَقَطَalighted الذُّبَابُflies عَلَيْهاon her
My killing her was not because I did not
Weep whenever flies alighted on her.
لكنْbut ضَنَنْتُI was stingy علىtoward العيونِthe eyes بِحُسْنِهاwith her beauty
وأَنِفْتُand I felt affronted مِنْby نَظَرِthe gaze of الحَسُودthe envious one إِليهاtoward her
But I begrudged other eyes her beauty,
And felt affronted by the envious one's gaze upon her.
