علىaround هذهِthis كانتْhad been تَدورُcircling النّوائِّبُcalamities
وفيand in كُلِّevery جَمْعٍgathering للذَّهَابِfor departure مَذَاهِبُpaths
Around this calamities had been circling,
and in every gathering lie paths to departure.
نَزَلْنَاwe submitted علىto حُكْمِthe judgment of الزَّمانِTime وأَمرِهِand its decree
وهلand does يَقْبَلُaccept النَّصْفَfairness الألَدُّthe obstinate one المُشَاغِبُthe quarrelsome one
We submitted to Time's judgment and decree;
but does the obstinate troublemaker accept fairness?
وتَضحكُand laughs سِنُّthe tooth of المرْءِa man والقلبُwhile the heart مُوجَعٌis pained
ويرضىand is content الفَتَىthe young man عنwith دَهْرِهِhis times وهوَwhile he is عاتِبُreproachful
And a man's teeth laugh while his heart aches;
and a man is content with his times, though full of reproach.
أَلاَlisten! أَيُّهاO you الرُّكْبانُriders والرَّدُand an answer واجبٌis due
قِفُواstop حَدِّثُوناtell us ماwhat تَقُولُsay النّوادِبُthe mourning women
Ho, you riders—an answer is due—
stop and tell us what the mourning women say.
إلىtoward أَيِّwhich فِتْيانِyoung men of النّدىgenerosity قَصَدَheaded الرَّدىDeath
وأَيُّهُمُand which of them نابَتْassailed حِمَاهُhis sanctuary النّوائِبُcalamities
Which of generosity's young men has Death sought out,
and whose sanctuary have calamities assailed?
فيَاso alas لأَبيfor Abu العَبّاسِal-Abbas كَمْhow many رُدَّwas turned away راغبٌa suppliant
لِفَقْدِكَbecause of losing you مَلهوفاًgrief-stricken وكَمْand how many جُبَّwas cut off غَارِبُa camel's withers
Alas for Abu al-Abbas! How many a suppliant was turned away
at your loss, grief-stricken—and how many a camel's withers were severed!
وياand alas لأَبيfor Abu العَبّاسِal-Abbas إِنَّindeed مَنَاكِباًshoulders
تَنُوءُstrain under a burden بِمَاunder what حَمّلْتَهاyou loaded onto them لَنَواكِبُare surely stricken
And alas for Abu al-Abbas! Indeed, shoulders
that strain beneath what you laid on them are surely stricken.
فَيَاso O قَبْرَهُhis grave جُدْbe generous to كُلَّevery قَبْرٍgrave بِجُودِهِwith his generosity
فَفيكَfor within you سَمَاءٌa sky ثَرَّةٌpouring abundantly وسَحَائِبُand clouds
So, O grave of his, bestow his bounty on every grave,
for within you lie a rain-rich sky and clouds.
فإنّكَfor you لَوْif تَدْرِيknew بِماof what فِيكَis within you مِنْof عُلاًeminence
عَلَوْتَyou would rise high وباتَتْand would spend the night فيamong ذُرَاكَyour heights الكَواكِبُthe stars
For if you knew what heights of glory you contain,
you would rise high, and the stars would spend the night upon your peaks.
أَخاًa brother كُنتُI used to أَبكيهِweep for him دَماًblood وهوَwhile he was نائمٌasleep
حَذَاراًout of fear وتَعْمَىand would go blind مُقْلَتيmy eye وهوَwhile he was غائِبُaway
A brother for whom I would weep blood while he slept,
in fear; and my eye would grow blind when he was away.
فَماتَthen he died ولاand not صَبْريmy patience علىon الأَجْرِreward واقِفٌresting
ولاnor أناI فيfor عُمْرٍa span of life إلىto اللّهِGod راغِبُdesirous
Then he died, and my patience does not rest on reward,
nor do I ask God for life.
أَأَسعىshould I strive? لأَحْظَىso I may gain فيكَthrough you بالأَجْرِwith reward إنّهُindeed it is
لَسَعْيٌsurely a striving إِذَنْthen مِنِّيْon my part لَدَىbefore اللّهِGod خَائِبُfruitless
Should I strive to gain reward through you? It would
then indeed be a fruitless striving of mine before God.
ومَاand not الإِثْمُsin إِلاَّexcept الصَّبْرُpatience عَنْكَwithout you وإنّماand only
عَواقِبُoutcomes of حَمْدٍpraise أَنْthat تُذَمَّbe condemned العَواقِبُthe outcomes
And sin is nothing but patience without you; the only
praiseworthy outcomes lie in having outcomes condemned.
يقولونَthey say مِقْدَارٌa destined decree علىupon المَرْءِa man وَاجِبٌis inevitable
فقلتُso I said وإِعْوالٌand wailing علىupon المرءِa man واجِبُis incumbent
They say, 'A man's allotted fate is inevitable.'
So I said, 'And wailing is a man's duty.'
هُوَit is القَلْبُthe heart لَمّاwhen حُمَّwas decreed يَوْمُthe day of ابنِthe son of أُمِّهِits mother
وَهَىgave way جانِبٌone side مِنْهُof it وأُسْقِمَand was sickened جانِبُanother side
It is the heart: when the day of its mother's son was decreed,
one side of it gave way, and another was stricken.
تَرَشّفْتُI sipped أَيّامِيْmy days وَهُنَّwhile they were كَوالِحٌscowling
عليكat you وغَالبْتُand I struggled against الرَّدىDeath وهوَthough it was غالِبprevailing
I sipped my days while they scowled
at you, and fought against Death, though Death prevailed.
ودَافَعْتُand I pushed back فيagainst صَدْرِthe breast of الزَّمَانِTime ونَحْرِهِand its throat
وأَيُّand what يَدٍpower ليhave I والزَّمانُwhile Time مُحَارِبُis waging war
And I pushed against Time's breast and throat;
yet what power have I when Time wages war?
وقلتُand I said لهُto it خَلِّleave الجَوادَthe generous man لِقَومِهِto his people
وهَاand here أَنَذاI am فَازْدَدْso take more فإنّاfor we are عَصَائِبُbands of men
And I said to it, 'Leave the generous man to his people,
and here I am—take more, for we are multitudes.'
فَوَاللّهِso by God إِخْلاصاًsincerely مِنَof القَولِspeech صَادقاًtruthfully
وإلاَّor else فَحُبِّيthen my love for آلَthe family of أَحْمَدَAhmad كاذِبُis false
So by God, with sincere and truthful words—
or else my love for the House of Ahmad is false—
لَوَif انَّthat يَدِيmy hand كانَتْwere شِفَاءَكَyour cure أَوْor دَمِيmy blood
دَمَthe blood of القَلْبِthe heart حتىuntil يَقْضِبَsevers القَلْبَthe heart قاضِبُa cutting blade
if my hand had been your cure, or my blood,
my heart's blood, until a blade severed the heart,
I would surely have surrendered تَسْليمَwith the surrender of الرِّضَاwilling consent وتَخِذْتُهاand would have counted it
يَداًa favor للرَّدَىto Death's credit ماas long as حَجَّmakes pilgrimage لِلّهِfor God راكِبُa rider
I would have yielded willingly, and counted it
a favor from Death, as long as any rider makes pilgrimage for God.
فَتىًa young man كانَwas مِثْلَlike السّيْفِa sword مِنْfrom حَيْثُwherever جئتَهُyou came to him
لنائبةٍfor a calamity نابَتْكَthat befell you فهوَthen he مُضَارِبُwas a fighter
A young man who was like a sword: however you approached him
over a calamity that befell you, he would fight.
فَتىًa young man هَمُّهُhis aim حَمْدٌpraise علىthroughout الدَّهْرِtime رابِحٌprofitable
وإِنْeven if غابَwent away عنهُfrom him مالُهُhis wealth فهَوَthen it was عازِبُfar away
A young man whose aim was praise, profitable through all time,
even if his wealth left him, wandering far away.
شَمَائِلُvirtues إِنْif يَشْهَدْhe is present فَهُنَّthen they are مَشَاهِدٌspectacles
عِظَامٌmagnificent وإِنْand if يَرْحَلْhe journeys فَهُنَّthen they are كَتَائِبُbattalions
Virtues that, when he was present, were spectacles
of grandeur; and when he journeyed, they were battalions.
بَكَاكَwept for you أَخٌa brother لَمْdid not تَحْوِهِyou embrace him بَقَرابَةٍthrough kinship
بَلىyes indeed إِنَّtruly إِخْوانَbrothers in الصَّفاءِpure affection أَقاربُare kinsmen
A brother wept for you, bound to you by no blood tie;
yes indeed, brothers in pure affection are kin.
وأَظْلَمَتِand grew dark الدُّنْياthe world التيwhich كُنْتَyou were جَارَهَاits neighbor
كَأنّكَas though you were للِدُّنْياto the world أَخٌa brother ومُنَاسِبُand a kinsman
And the world, whose neighbor you were, grew dark,
as though you were the world's brother and kinsman.
يُبَرِّدُcools نِيرانَthe fires of المَصَائِبِcalamities أَنّنيthat I
أَرىI see زَمَناًa time لَمْnot تَبْقَremain فيهِin it مَصَائِبُcalamities
What cools the fires of calamity is that I
see a time in which no calamities remain.
