وآنِسَةٍand a maiden عَذْبِsweet of الثّناياfront teeth وجدتُهاI found her
علىupon خُطّةٍa course of action فيهاin it لِذيfor one possessed of اللُّبِّreason مَتْلَفُruin
And a maiden with sweet teeth—I found her
A maiden with sweet dimples I found
on a course that held ruin for a man of reason.
In a spot made for lovers to gather around
فَأَصْلَتُso I bared حَدَّthe edge of السّيفِthe sword فيagainst حُرِّthe fair part of وَجْهِهَاher face
وقَلْبِيand my heart عليهاfor her مِنْfrom جَوىthe burning anguish of الوَجْدِpassionate love يَرْجفُtrembles
So I bared the sword’s edge against her fair face,
I thrust my sword hilt-deep into her face
while my heart trembled for her with love’s burning anguish.
With my heart a-flutter in passionate embrace
فَخَرَّتْso she fell كماjust as خَرَّتْfell مَهَاةٌan oryx أَصابَهاstruck her
أَخُوa man of قَنَصٍhunting مُسْتَعْجِلٌhasty مُتَعَسِّفُreckless
Then she fell, as an oryx falls when struck
She fell like a stricken doe pierced by the lead
by a hunter, hasty and reckless.
Of an archer in hurry with violence misled
سَيَقْتُلُنيwill kill me حُزْناًwith grief عليهاfor her تَأسُّفِيmy regret
وهَيهاتَand alas ماnot يُجْدِيdoes any good عَلَيَّfor me التّأَسُّفُregret
My regret will kill me with grief for her,
Grief for her shall slay me in time, I fear
but alas, regret does me no good.
Alas, what use is there in wasting my tears
