يا من لقلبٍ شديد الهمّ مخزون
أمسىspent the evening تذكّرrecalling ريّاRayya أمّmother of هارونHarun
أمسى تذكّر ريّا أمّ هارون
Oh, who will help a heart heavy with care and pent-up grief?
O you whose heart is laden with heavy concerns,
It spent the evening recalling Rayya, mother of Harun.
Has become, remembering Rayya, mother of Harun,
أمسىspent the evening تذكرهاremembering her منfrom بعدماafter شحطَتshe went far away
أمسى تذكرها من بعدما شحطَت
والدهرand time ذوpossessing غلظharshness حيناat times وذولينand possessing gentleness
والدهر ذو غلظ حينا وذولين
It spent the evening remembering her after she had gone far away.
Has come to remember her after she went far away
And time is harsh at times, and at others gentle.
While time is sometimes harsh and sometimes gentle,

فإن يكن حبّها أمسى لنا شحناً

وأصبح الوليّ منها لا يواتيني
So if her love should have become enmity toward us,
If love for her has become difficult for us now,
and closeness to her no longer comes my way,
And the confidant does not come to me anymore,

أطيع ريا وريا لا تعاصيني
we once dwelt with the household's unity joining us:
We were rich and the house brought us together,
I obeyed Rayya, and Rayya did not defy me.
Obey Rayya and Rayya do not disobey me,

We shot at the talebearers, never missing their vital spots,
We spurn slanderers, so we do not miss striking them,
with a hidden, pure essence of unclouded affection.
With sincere affection stored from pure intimacy,

And I have a paternal cousin; whatever our dispositions,
And I have a cousin, whatever his manners were,
we differ: I hate him, and he hates me.
We differ, so treat him gently and he treats me harshly,

فخالني دونه بل خليته دوني
He belittled us because our ostrich had risen—our company scattered;
It grieves me that our ostriches have turned away,
so he thought me beneath him; rather, I thought him beneath me.
So he has left me for him, rather he left him for me,

If a calamity of the days should strike you,
If the days blow you misfortune,
I would not weep for worldly worth or faith lost with you.
I did not weep over you, neither for worldly life nor for religion,

Nor with yourself alone suffice to shroud me,

If you seek this world's gains by belittling me,
If you wish to restore the honor of the world that scorned me,
that is something that does not grieve me.
That is not what grieves me,

Nor will you find any failing except in patience;
Do not see in anything but patience a deficiency,
as for anything else, God suffices for me.
And what is other than it, God suffices me,

Were it not for the ties of kinship that you do not preserve,
and fear of God regarding a kinsman hostile to me,
And fear of God in the Master who opposes me,

When I have absolved you, with no compulsion,
Indeed, I have seen you never cease to whittle me down.
I saw you do not cease to absolve me,

Indeed, the One who curtails this world and spreads it wide,
He who unfolds and folds the world,
if He has made you independent of me, will make me independent too.
If He has enriched you without me, He will enrich me,

If you drink my blood, your drinker is not sated,
nor would all your blood together quench my thirst.
And your blood together does not quench me,

He would remain confined by arrows striking me,

O Amr, will you not leave insulting me and belittling me?
I shall strike you until the skull-owl says, 'Give me drink!'
I will strike you until the brain says “Give me drink!”

Away from me, back to yourself! For my mother was no herdswoman
My judgment is not that of a simple shepherd woman
tending pregnant she-camels, nor is my judgment deceived.
Who herds the birthings, nor is my view deluded.

I am clearly, clearly one who guards propriety
and the son of a proud, unyielding man, descended from unyielding men.
And son of one clearly, clearly of two clearnesses,

Gentle there, for I do not stand firm in gentleness,

Nor am I gentle to one who does not seek my gentleness,

And if you miss the path of righteousness, come to me!

with no flaw in the garment's beauty or softness.
No fault in the robe, of beauty or of softness,

One day I pulled hard on something capacious and wide-mouthed,
One day I was harsh to a spindly, towering woman,
one day in time—it sometimes contends with me.
One day of time the platters kept passing me,

My affection, constant in the breast, concealed,

O Lord, a harshly clamorous, lion-like man came,
I frightened the pledger among them and the pledged.
I was frightened of whoever believed in him and his pledge,

until they remained opponents, contending in many ways.
So they remain defeated, with fleeting lives,

Lenient, noble, rewarding those who reward me,

One hand that inspires, while another from you oppresses me,
