إلا لجودٍ وفَكِّ عانِ
Wealth and standing are wasted,
Wealth and glory are lost
Except in generosity and freeing a captive.
Save to generosity and breaking of fetters

How many a miser they made choke when
How many misers have they enriched for a time
He returned to abasement and humiliation!
Only to return to humiliation and abjection?

بلا اصطناعٍ ولا امْتِنان
He gained them for a while, then they vanished,
They had them awhile, then passed from them
Without kindness done or favors bestowed.
Without artifice or obligation

Like the sword and spear when hidden
As the sword and spear when unsheathed
Is their power in a coward's hand.
Lose their potency in the hands of the coward

And the most prudent of all people is he who does not
And most prudent of all men is he who
Dismiss reproach from any tongue.
Is not despised for the blame on his tongue
