غَدَوْناwe went in the morning إلىto أَرْؤُسٍheads أُحْكمِتْwere expertly prepared
غَدَوْنا إلى أَرْؤُسٍ أُحْكمِتْ
وَتَمَّتْand became complete مَحاسنُthe beauties أوصافِهاof their features
وَتَمَّتْ مَحاسنُ أوصافِها
We went in the morning to heads expertly prepared,
and the beauty of their features was complete.
صِغارsmall لهاthey have سِمَنٌplumpness ظاهِرevident
صِغار لها سِمَنٌ ظاهِر
تدلthey attest علىto حِذْقthe skill عَلاّفهاof their feeder
تدل على حِذْق عَلاّفها
Small, with a plumpness plain to see,
attesting to their feeder’s skill.
حَكتْthey resembled قِطَعَpieces القطنِof cotton ملفوفةًrolled up
حَكتْ قِطَعَ القطنِ ملفوفةً
كماjust as فارقتْthey left كفَّthe palm نَدَّافِهاof their cotton-carder
كما فارقتْ كفَّ نَدَّافِها
They resembled pieces of cotton, rolled up,
just as they left their cotton-carder’s hand.
كأنas though تماثيلَthe likenesses أشخاصِهاof their forms
كأن تماثيلَ أشخاصِها
وأفواههاand their mouths تحتbeneath آنافهاtheir noses
وأفواهها تحت آنافها
It was as though the likenesses of their forms—
with their mouths beneath their noses—
خَليعcast-off الطَّراطيرِconical caps بيضاwhite وقدand already
خَليع الطَّراطيرِ بيضا وقد
تَفتَّقَhad split open ماthat which فوقabove أطرافهاtheir edges
تَفتَّقَ ما فوق أطرافها
were cast-off white conical caps, with
the part above their edges split open.
