This spring has come with the loveliest scene,

Strutting amid brocade and safflower-dyed finery.

So rise to joy’s summons, and spare me

What people say, whether you excuse me or not.

And hasten to steal time’s fleeting moments with us,

While Time, in its heedless spells, takes no notice.

And the east wind stirs the garden, raising from

Its reaches wafts of heady musk.

And the yellow glow of late afternoon within it seems

Like yellow dye-powder sprinkled over a green carpet.

And the western horizons have already enfolded half the sun,

So it gazes with the eye of one departing in regret.

And the sky is edged with sunset’s twilight glow,

Like a garden encircled by red roses.

And the crescent appeared, two nights old, as though it were

A thumb-to-forefinger span holding an apple of ambergris.

And the water offers flattery to the breeze,

So it flows, now gently advancing, now breaking into ripples.

And the birds’ plaintive song enchants their branches,

So they keep swaying and swaggering.

And the night steals away the day, like a band

Of Ham’s descendants following al-Asfar’s descendants.
