Parting pursued its designs to scatter all I held together,

and aimed piercing shots that never ran out.

As though my heart among them lay beneath arrows

that bare their iron points when loosed.

and shot again until its hand and forearm wearied.

It barred the open air with arrows until it made me

their captive, wherever I turned aside.

I am only a sword that has left its sheath

and found none to sheathe it after striking and cutting.

So dew's rust covered it, leaving it

as Time has left the crumbling ruins.

As though the nights had sworn an oath,

reaffirming it: I shall not return to the seaport,

beauty distracts the water-seeker from drinking!

And its sweet, limpid water pleased the eye as it grew clear,

and it brimmed at its watering places, overflowing.

Beneath the wind you see in it a coat of mail and a breastplate,

and a sword without a sheath when it lies still.

As though the east wind, when it stirred its ripples,

were running files across a keen-edged sword.

I wonder, have pearls settled beside Ard al-Sawari,

drops of rain turned to jewels among the plants?

And has a garden appeared on the outskirts of al-Hasan,

toward Ibn al-As's hill, and upward from there,

westward to both sides of Qasr al-Dukhan,

as far as al-Muqs? May remembrance water those old haunts!

And has al-Qulayda's neck, since our departure, been adorned

by rain's hand with necklaces of spring flowers?

Beds of flowers whose fragrance repeats

far-spreading thanks and praises to the rain.

The rainstorms' hand writes pages there,

and the breeze, their reciter, chants them as poems.

How wondrous, by God, that garden praising the rain,

and, by God, that rain, the garden's benefactor!

Treasures revealed—were it not for the wilting that befalls them,

the moneychangers' stock would become unsaleable.

As though the daisies and oxeyes were silver dirhams

amid gold dinars, presented to an assayer.

And the open lilies have silver trumpets,

    facing lances of crimson anemones.

Never before this had I seen a glowing ember

that the hand, on touching it, found cold.

And if the wind scattered its petals, you would take them

for scraps of red silk fashioned into cushions.

we set out early for it, preparing those stratagems.

The sun's first rim had scarcely shown when among us

were suns whose embers consumed the wild beasts.

and here I am, grieving in regret's fetters.

Like Adam with Satan, when he made him stumble

from eternal Paradise to the lowly world, out of envy.

So here I am weeping, just as he wept,

suffering what he suffered before me,

a captive of exile and longing, as though I

were wrestling lions and black serpents born of both.
