يا مَنْ صَفا لي ظاهِرا ونِيَّهْ

يا مَنْ صَفا لي ظاهِرا ونِيَّهْ

ومَنْ يدي بِوُدِّه غَنِيَّةْ

ومَنْ يدي بِوُدِّه غَنِيَّةْ

O you who are sincere toward me, outwardly and in intent,

O you whose intentions and affection are pure

and you through whose affection my hand is rich,

And whose love enriches me

وَقَتْك نفسي وافدَ المَنِيَّة

وَقَتْك نفسي وافدَ المَنِيَّة

هَلُمَّ عندي تحفةٌ سَنِية

هَلُمَّ عندي تحفةٌ سَنِية

may my soul shield you from death's messenger.

Though death takes my soul

Come: I have a splendid gift,

Come, I have an aged gift for you

وأكلةٌ طيبة هَنِيّة

وأكلةٌ طيبة هَنِيّة

بنتُ نخيلٍ حلوةٌ جَنِيّة

بنتُ نخيلٍ حلوةٌ جَنِيّة

and a tasty, delightful morsel:

And a delicious, sweet meal

a sweet, freshly plucked daughter of the palms,

The fruit of sweet, ripe palms

أحلَى من الفرصةِ بالأُمنيَّة

أحلَى من الفرصةِ بالأُمنيَّة

بالغ فيها النُّضجُ وهْي نِيَّة

بالغ فيها النُّضجُ وهْي نِيَّة

sweeter than the chance to fulfill a wish.

Sweeter than hopes and wishes

Ripeness has reached perfection in her, though she is raw.

Ripe to perfection though young

لا تُتِعب الضرس ولا الثَّنِيَّة

لا تُتِعب الضرس ولا الثَّنِيَّة

كأنها تُشْتَفُّ في الصِّينية

كأنها تُشْتَفُّ في الصِّينية

She strains neither molar nor incisor,

It won’t bother the molars or incisors

as though she were sipped from the platter:

As if it melts away in the bowl

يا قوتة حمراء معدنية

يا قوتة حمراء معدنية

في طمعها وزيها مكّية

في طمعها وزيها مكّية

a red ruby from the mine,

O you red, precious delicacy

Meccan in her desire and her attire.

With a Mekkan allure and temptation

كأنما البرنية البرنية

كأنما البرنية البرنية

فهْي لها شَبيهة كَنِيَّة

فهْي لها شَبيهة كَنِيَّة

As though the Barni date were the burniyya jar,

As if a date, a date

for she resembles it and shares its name.

So very much alike
