ياO مُذْنِباsinner أضحتْhave become لدىّin my eyes ذنوبهhis sins
حسناbeauty وإحسانيand my kindness إليهtoward him جرائرْcrimes
O sinner, whose sins have become, in my eyes,
Beauty, while my kind deeds toward him are crimes.
عَجَباhow astonishing لأهِلكat your people كيفhow أهلكI perish بينهمamong them
وأموتand I die لمdid not يشعرbecome aware بقتليof my murder شاعرa poet
I marvel at your people: how can I perish among them
And die, yet no poet has sensed my murder?
ليلِيmy night كفرْعِكlike your tresses ظلمةًin darkness وتَطاوُلاand in length
لاينتهيit does not end ولكلand for every ليلٍnight آخرan end
My night is like your tresses in darkness and length;
It never ends, though every night has an end.
وكأنّand as though وجهَthe face of الصبحdawn وجهُكyour face صَدَّهturned it away
عنيfrom me رقيُبكyour watcher فهْوso it is ناءٍdistant نافرshying away
And it is as if dawn's face were yours, held back
From me by your watcher; so it is distant and shying away.
ليI have ضَعفُfrailty صبرٍof patience مثلُlike خصركyour waist شَفَّهwore it thin
هجرٌestrangement كردفكlike your buttocks فهْوso it is جافٍharsh جائرunjust
My patience is frail, like your waist, worn thin
By estrangement like your buttocks—harsh and unjust.
