ياO ساحلَshore of الثَّغْرِthe port كمhow much أَنْأَىI go far away وأغْترِبُand I live in exile
أماis there no إليكَto you مَدىthroughout الأيامِthe days مُنقَلَبُa return
O shore of the port, how far I stray and live in exile!
Is there no return to you in all the days to come?
وياand O أوائلَearliest أيامِdays of الشبابِyouth بهin it
هلis there ليfor me إليكنّto you all فيهin it ساعةًfor an hour سَبَبُa way
And O earliest days of youth there,
is there a way for me to reach you there for an hour?
واللهِby God ماnot اخترتُI chose مِصْراEgypt عنكَinstead of you عنout of مِقَةٍlove
وإنْand even though غَداhas become العيشُlife لِيfor me فيهاin it كماas يَجِبُit should be
By God, I did not choose Egypt over you out of love,
though life for me there has become as it should be.
ولوand even if جَرىflowed نيلُهاits Nile ليfor me فضةًsilver وغَداand became
سفحُthe slope of المُقطَّمMuqattam منهاwithin it وهوand it ليmine ذهَبgold
Even if its Nile flowed as silver for me, and
the slope of Muqattam there became gold that was mine,
ماnot اخْترتُهاI would choose it عِوضَاas a substitute ممنfor those whom نشأتُI grew up بهاin it
ولاnor شفَىwould quench ليَfor me منهاfrom it غُلَّةًa burning thirst أَرَبُan object of desire
I would not choose it in place of those I grew up with there,
nor would any gain from it quench my burning thirst.
جارhas dealt unjustly الزمانُTime علىwith شَمْليmy union with loved ones ولاand no عجبٌwonder
منat ذلكthat الْجَوْرِinjustice بلrather إنْصافهits fairness عَجَبa wonder
Time has wronged my bonds with loved ones; no wonder
at such injustice—rather, its fairness is the wonder.
لكنْbut إذاwhen أكَّدَtightens المِقدارُfate عُقْدتَهits knot
فكلُّthen every حلٍّuntying إذاwhen حاولَتهyou attempt it تعبtoil
But when fate tightens its knot,
then every effort to untie it is toil.
لاdo not تَفْرَحنَّrejoice إذاwhen أعطاكَit gives you منsome عُرُضٍa chance gain
فإنfor indeed بعضsome of عَطاياهُits gifts لهit has سَبَبa reason
Do not rejoice when it grants you some chance gain,
for some of its gifts have a reason behind them.

Yield when the inevitable comes, for neither
vigilance nor flight can save you from its coming to pass.
