    فحَسْبِيَ ما مَضَّ الفؤادَ وما شَفَّا

    My longing is too great for me to describe it;

    enough for me is what has anguished my heart and worn it thin.

    وهل نافِعي قولي لبعدك والهفا

    I ceaselessly repeat, 'Alas!' at your absence;

    but does saying 'Alas!' at your absence avail me?

    That evening, I had no means but my tears

    to help me; tears of the eye are more healing for one near death.

    No bird whose wing Time has clipped,

    and which it has deprived of a nest and robbed of a mate,

    recalling downy chicks among a bān tree's boughs,

    their inner flight-feathers hidden, too weak to fly with them,

    yearns more than I did the day separation bore you far away,

    in an air- and water-borne vessel, outstripping the gaze.

    It departed, bearing something of you that, were I to compare it

    with the water it floats in, its bounty would be more abundant.
