My gratitude for your nearness and my longing

are two rival steeds in a race.

    The tongue reveals the one,

and the corners of the eyes reveal the other.

    ن وجدتُ من جَدْواهُ راقِ

    O you—when Time stings,

    I find in your bounty a healer versed in charms;

and when I bow beneath misfortune,

your generous deeds loosen my bonds.

By God, I shall not fear Time,

    nor heed what I encounter,

so long as you remain my strength, with which I charge

against the days, while you endure.
