My dear friends at al-Thaghr, separation has endured,

And sorrow and longing have clung to me.

I have borne your absence with forced patience, in two states:

Blazing grief and tears poured out.

And I forced my heart to seek solace,

Yet all it gained from her was divorce.

And the hardest thing that souls have attempted

In any undertaking is imposing what cannot be borne.

Is there, then, a way for me to live among you

    As I once did—a handhold, a bond?

Those nights when, in youth, we were carried at a gallop

    To pleasure’s arena by noble steeds;

And the reprovers’ share of my hearing

Was outward show, with hypocrisy beneath.

    And reproach, between renewed union

And coy estrangement, had delicate fringes.

And suppose that returned—where is youth,

Now settled where it cannot be overtaken?

Though I am in the grip of calamities,

    Thwarted whenever I seek release,

Yet my heart, since distance took me captive,

Runs away toward you every day.

It allies itself with a soul that, whenever

It recalls life among you, races ahead.

I broke off my correspondence with you

Because of a tale being carried to you.

    Things occurred without intent,

    Yet they happened to coincide.

And whoever does not conciliate before entering

Regrets it when the noose tightens.

News reached me of the slanders spread

Against me by enemies when they grew afraid and hard-pressed.

And no barking dog has harmed the full moon of night,

Howling while the moon shines full on high.

And suppose they embellished a deceptive lie—

Does speech not have meanings one can taste?

And had I been in the habit of meddling,

A fabricated tale about me would be believed.

But it is only a puff of breath released

By an envious man choking on a lodged bone.

And falsehood, when paraded as scandal,

Has beginnings whose ends are obliteration.

And suppose I have drunk from the cup of death—

Has he not a brimming cup of it too?

Peace be upon you, like the musk of gardens,

    Blended with a breeze just before dawn;

And sweeter than sips of sweet saliva

    Lavished by delicate lips;

And more delightful than the start of a greeting

That ends in kisses and an embrace.
