May God bless you, O son of His Messenger,

And guide humankind, through obedience to you, to His path.

Through you truth is established and guidance made clear,

And the face of its proof becomes manifest to humankind and jinn.

O son of the imams, from the crest of Hashim,

A nobility exalted in its branches and its roots.

And destroyer of the Romans' realm through the victory that

The verses from its Gospel proclaimed.

    يمحو الفِرِنْجَة منه بعضُ سيوله

    Syria has glimpsed from it the mightiest lightning-cloud;

Some of its torrents wash away the Franks.

Hasten with a day like Badr; if that one was

Your father's, then this is his descendant's.

Their doom has come; so near is it that it almost

Makes us hear, from among them, its shrieking wail.

How wondrous, by God, an army like yours, bearing battle-marks!

For victory marches ceaselessly with its march.

Were it not for the uproar, an attentive listener could almost hear

The angels' voices within it, amid its chants of God's oneness.

And set the steeds running: every coursing charger

Neighs mightily in longing for this victory.

And draw the swords, then: every Indian-forged blade

Is thin beyond measure for the necks of unbelievers.

Let the Franks stand firm against the lion in him,

Who has sent deaths upon them from his thicket.

Their wealth, their womenfolk, and their blood are

Nothing but his deposit in his agent's hand.

The land is like the sea with his horsemen,

And the sea like the land with his fleet.

A host above whose lances birds spend the night,

For its multitude leaves no place for their midday rest.

The globe, which it fills, has grown too narrow for it,

Until its vanguard almost splits it apart.

O highest of caliphs in rank, O imam

Of truth—an appeal from one sincere in his words:

Indeed, the one you enabled us to praise,

And raised in sovereignty after his descent,

And spread the renown of his name among humankind and jinn,

So that mouths spoke of him after his obscurity—

You are the intended aim of every ode

Founded upon discernment to exalt him,

Like the prostration of heaven's angels before Adam,

Their prostration, rightly understood, being to God.

You bestowed favors on him whose worth grew immense

In honor; he repaid them with boundless betrayal of trust.

He reached the Pleiades in your shelter; yet his lot now

Lies beneath the deepest earth through his pursuit of excess.

You made him like the sun among humankind,

Yet his deeds decree his imminent setting.

He was beguiled by the judgment that destroyed him

And delivered him to his fetters and shackles.

The lures of hope deceive the man of reason

And make the sage of his age like its fool.

God aids whoever obeys you sincerely

And destroys him in abasement when he draws back.

For you have been so just that you almost desired to exact

Vengeance on Abel for his Cain.

You have given until your generosity engulfs the

World and those within it with part of its downpour.

You have been so forbearing that your pardon outstrips the

Offender to the furthest reaches of his hopes.

You granted refuge from time's tyranny; it has no

Turn whose upheavals the noble man need fear.

The utmost bounds of your praise cannot be reached; to reach them

Means silencing the concise panegyrist and defeating the lengthy one.

Like the sea: the utmost reach of reason cannot

Ever attain its full weight or measure.

What can the panegyrists say, when already

The Qur'an has appeared in revelation with praise of you?

You are the one through whom God has sent to us

Your forefathers, embodied in your presence.

Even the Hijaz has wished, in yearning,

That you might visit its traces and ruins,

And recognize your face's due as it once recognized theirs,

In bygone days, through your beauty and beneficence.

Let the Sacred House and its Hijr cling,

    With its Maqam and Hatim, to your robe's hems;

And let the mighty Stone hasten, having no choice

But to touch your hands or kiss you.

Then Mecca and Tayba will say:

This is the son of Haydara, the approved one, and his Batul.

This is God's radiance and the meaning

In whose explanation scholars surpass one another.

This is the son of one whose God drew him near to Himself,

Like the span of two bows, in the likeness given.

This is the son of one to whose grandfather the foreleg spoke,

    When the unbelievers poisoned him in his food;

The one in whom the jinn of the land believed, having

Heard God's word in its revelation.

God kept passing him on, purified,

From the loins of such as His Sacrificial One and His Friend.

The prophets inherited him in turn, and the lords of the

Caliphs, until the time came for his arrival.

I swear by his birth and the radiance of his face,

A glory that rose high for his age and his generation:

This is he who humbles polytheism with a resolve that

Leaves none but his captives and his slain.

Your gifts have freed the land of Egypt from need of rain,

In bounty; receiving them has freed it from need of its Nile.

It cast shame upon the rain until it turned

Away from Egypt, while the Nile remained an uninvited guest.

It seeks to resemble you in generosity,

Yet the least bounty of your hands equals its greatest.

Your bounty is more constant, and sweeter in its effect

Than the Nile's, so it never ceases to put it to shame.

Were no regard shown for its close neighborhood,

Your bounty would drench it in its mighty downpour.

    فالْخَلقُ بين هُموله وشُموله

    A generosity that overflows for those near and those far;

All creation lies between its downpour and its all-embracing reach.

O seeker of religion and worldly life together,

Who pursues them both at a gallop and a trot,

To Egypt! God's gate is there, O seeker of the

Favors: mankind has prospered by entering it.

Al-Amir al-Mansur, the mountain beneath whose

Lowlands the kings of the earth stand.

    ما عازَه في الخلق غيرُ عَديله

    He is one, and all mankind is but a part of him;

Among creation he lacks nothing but his equal.

O bright brow of truth, illuminating mankind,

For its sign is plain upon the one it signifies.

This is a station for which I strove unceasingly,

To attain it, laboring earnestly to secure it,

Until I stood before your throne, reciting

Words you understand best of all who listen.

I shall surely boast of this, to torment my envier,

Until he dies of his rage and burning spite.

Enjoy this feast-day; it, too, is to be congratulated

In your presence, for its nearness and arrival.

It came, and promptly gained glory from you,

Which time won from its Isma'il.

You have honored us and our age, so all of us

Are distinguished within our kind and our tribe.

Remain safe and endure; greet the years with a new beginning

Of life, as sweet and long as the bounty of your hands.
