Lightning gleamed from Naʿmān, stretching across,

Stirring within my ribs a cloud that arose.

So I kept lamenting love, with longing like its flash,

Within burning ribs that lament wasting sickness.

I was not the first lovesick soul to die of anguish,

For fear of rejection; his days passed, and he passed away.

How many a lover gained what he hoped for without toil,

And another, whose suffering love's cruelty increased, died.

How wondrous are those for whom I pine in love,

And those because of whom every limb complains of sickness.

My heart once sufficed them and guarded them,

Yet since they struck camp, it has found no replacement for them.

They journeyed, and my heart journeyed along their path,

So whenever they urged their camels on, it galloped too.

At the head of the company, beauty's sun is borne

By a figure that sways like a bough, then quivers.

    A tall, slender-figured, delicate maiden—whenever she looses

Love's arrow, she finds my heart a target for it.
