Is what came to me from you a garden, or a letter?

Are its contents pearls, or reproach?

Meanings whose beauty enraptures the eloquent,

    and words refined and sweet.

Letters that would, if pondered by an old man

advanced in years, restore his youth to him.

Whiteness from the faces of the fair, in which

    blackness from their hair dissolves.

And ears sip from it speech

delicious, as sweet saliva is sipped.

Like garden blossoms greeted at dawn by a breeze,

opening among them what the clouds have watered.

I thrilled with joy on learning what it held,

as wine delights a tipsy man.

I try to answer it, but

my failure to answer it is an answer.

And how could I, when longing has left of me

only a heart tossed about by dejection,

trying to drive sorrow away from itself,

though claw and fang have already seized it,

and a spirit to which yearning grants no rest,

and a soul to which torment grants no relief?

And none but my eye enjoyed nearness to you,

while torment befell the rest of my body.

As in the saying of a man of experience and understanding,

whose words delight you with their truth:

And a crime was committed by the fools of a people,

so punishment befell one who had not committed it.
