Is death anything but less than what I face,

Though, for your sake, I find sweet what I endure?

And indeed a passion overtakes me, melting me

With its heat, while water is frozen in the bitter cold.

And I thirst until I cannot recover from thirst,

Though the watering places have overflowed with the tears I have shed.

Does reproach concerning you suppose I have heeded it?

Then my hand would have been miserly with what I possess,

And I would have denied the bounty of al-Afdal, the king whose

Two hands are necklaces for the necks of kings.
