فقَصْدُه ضدُّ ما تَرْضَى به شِيَمِي
In love I experienced what it experienced from my lofty aspirations;
I found in love what none before me found,
for its aim opposes what my noble traits approve.
Its purpose contradicts my nature's bent.

Even at its strongest it does not show itself
Though powerful it shows not but in a glance
except in a glance of the eye or a word from the mouth.
Of the eye or in a sudden word's consent.

My seclusion arouses no suspicion in the jealous,
My privacy admits no jealous doubt,
despite unjust accusations against the tooth-stick and mouth-veils.
Despite my freedom with the toothbrush absent.

I will not approve for the one I love, even if
I please not those whose love may yield regret
his nature approves, of anything that leads to regret.
Though their nature calls for mere present content.

I remain chaste, despite what I endure, when I have the power;
Gentle am I, though suffer at my might,
so I am suspected of no wrongdoing in it.
No blame of me in this does evidence present.

And if my passion brought suspect on me
in a dream-vision, I would deny my eyes the delight of dreams.
From shades in dream, I'd veil mine eyes in sleep's tent.

Suppose the consequences of sins are not feared
Go bravely where disasters start, nor dread
by a young man's soul—where, then, is his noble pride?
What may befall, the youth's soul brooks no prevent.

But for the mind's decree that curbs the soul,
upon souls, people would be like livestock.
All men would be like sheep without relent.

If, through living, you do not acquire
If you gain not virtue throughout your life,
virtues, then nonexistence has the advantage.
Then nothingness were better than life present.

No better than an idol resident.

by the wise, the living would be like moldering bones.
The living to the lifeless were equivalent.

The wise man thrives on what makes the ignorant suffer,
The wise attain what makes the foolish mourn
like one opening a vein, seeking healing through pain.
As the blood-letter finds his healing balm in torment.

Good repute is a life that never ends,
Fame's sweet praise grants everlasting life
guarded against the ravages of gray hair and old age.
Immune from age and ruin's detriment.

Rise now, while high endeavors woo and call,
or, if it does not, stand steadfast in hope of it.
Stand first, while others hesitate, negligent.

For the bane of a man's pursuit of eminence arises
In aspiring high, take no man's pedigree
from his saying 'later,' or his saying 'then how much?'
As help, work for yourself, despairing never, reticent.

Do not rely on ancestry in rising to it,
I am the son of him whose mighty soul
and work for yourself; beware the course of weariness.
The world obeyed, of Arab and Ajam penitent.

This is the son of one to whose resolve the world submitted,
Noblest king, whose mighty justice grew
who subjected all people, Arabs and non-Arabs:
To need no show of outward ornament.

Al-Afdal, the just king, so great have grown
My hands hold kingship's reins, and kings are slaves
his dignities that they need no greatness.
To me, as is all time and circling firmament.

That is his hands' dominion; kings are his,
With Allah's guidance, sword, and pen, he gained
and Time and the revolving celestial sphere are his servants.
Empire of high and low by strength and wise temperament.

And providence - behold his government!

Prostrate, though loftiest in realm and parent.

And day alternate serving his commandment.

within it, for the honored and exalted, and for the offender.
Least of his gifts exceed whate'er is said in testament.

Gifts whose myriad bounty pleads his fame
is a lifetime; its visitor is in a sanctuary of safety.
With less than others' scatter of Life's lent.

But that his might restored our weakened faith,
with a fraction of the favors they scattered among people.
drowned else in the torrent of the turbident.

Our heroes, else disgraced in foul misjudgment.

When his decrees go forth, Time quails, and serves
clear weather, it would drown in his raging torrent.
His every wish, like servant penitent.

All this, though a bucketful from his sharp swords
The sphinx keeps trembling vigil in her fear,
makes it, from the enemies' necks, a sea of blood.
And Aesad crouch amid their scrunt entrenchment.

Sharp swords in which his resolves have kindled
In heaven the meteors, and afreets in gloom,
a fire by which champions become like charcoal.
The deep-sea monsters and the Jinn lie quiescent,

Resolves whose flashes Time never watches
How many powers' mighty onslaughts fell to him!
without our rousing fear of them, as of an avenger.
How many sharp swords failed to make a dent!

Thus they pass no king but he lies cast in the dust,
Enthroned while kings stood fearful, armyless,
and confront no army that is not defeated.
You rose when prostrate foes arose, negligent.

Fate in its course fears them, so they command it
Restored faith's fallen champion with your voice,
to do whatever they desire, with an arbiter's authority.
Their ears deaf with fear, and senses violent.

and white-footed ibex on the summit, and lions in the thickets,
Its broken will - investigator heaven-sent.

High traits are yours, as bounty is made perfect,

While human gifts are frail and transient.

How often they wrestled with the forces of calamity, yet never weakened,
To tell your virtues fully is denied me,
and wrestled with fierce radiance, yet never flinched.
And so I fear the critic negligent.

As vainly measuring ocean's waves in hollows,
and you rose when, helpless, they sat and could not rise.
Or counting drops of rain in meadows pendant.

Despite its amplitude - the wise are negligent.

Completing your description, even at length, is impossible,

and whoever hopes to do so is touched by madness,
To wit - unlike prolixity, impermanent.
