تأملتُ بحرَ النيلِ طولا وخَلفَه

تأملتُ بحرَ النيلِ طولا وخَلفَه

من البركةِ الغَنّاء شكلٌ مُدَوَّرُ

من البركةِ الغَنّاء شكلٌ مُدَوَّرُ

I surveyed the Nile along its length, and behind it

lay the rounded shape of the luxuriant pool.

فكان وَقد لاحتْ بشَطَّيْهِ خُضْرة

فكان وَقد لاحتْ بشَطَّيْهِ خُضْرة

وكانتْ وَفيها الماءُ باقٍ مُوَفَّر

وكانتْ وَفيها الماءُ باقٍ مُوَفَّر

So the river, with greenery showing along both its banks,

and the pool, its water still abundant,

عِمامةَ شَرْبٍ في حواشٍ بُخضْرةٍ

عِمامةَ شَرْبٍ في حواشٍ بُخضْرةٍ

أُضيف إليها طَيْلسانٌ مُقَوَّر

أُضيف إليها طَيْلسانٌ مُقَوَّر

were a fine-linen turban with green borders,

to which a round-cut shawl had been added.
