    سلامٌ يَرِثُّ الدهرُ وهْو جديد

    Greetings to the port, so long unseen;

    A greeting ever fresh, though time grows threadbare.

    How many mornings and evenings were mine there,

    In which life was serene for me, just as I wished!

    Youth, loved ones, and a life as though it were

    A prince over the days, with them his soldiers.

    I send a message to the one I love, and it has no

    Courier but the winking of eyelids.

    And many a stolen kiss there, as though it were

    Cool, sweet-tasting water to the thirsty.

    Mouths in that port resemble its daisies

    When the sun glimpses them as they sway.

    You have grown distant against my will; how can I savor

    Life, however long it lasts, while they are far away?

    وسائرُ عمري بعدهنّ قَصيد

    Nights exquisite as verses rich in meaning;

    And the rest of my life after them is an ode.
