Do not rejoice in a rank

that your fortune has granted you among people.

And consider your place among the noble

virtues in truth, for that is your limit.

You are poor even with wealth

if you find no intellect to sustain you.

Suppose you have gained power over outward

    appearances—are people's hearts your army?

Do not be deceived by being

feared, nor be charmed by one who turns you back.

For it is a calamity that you should

stumble, and he who turns you back gives you no answer.

And if you are afflicted with its loss,

then your own loss is the best thing for you to hasten.
