Do not exult in a rank

that your good fortune has granted you among people.

And consider your place among the

virtues, in truth, for that is your limit.

You are poor despite your wealth

if you find no intellect to sustain you.

Suppose you have power over outward

    appearances—are people's hearts your troops?

Do not be deceived by one who

fears you, nor be charmed by one who loves you.

So if you are afflicted by its loss,

then the best thing you can hasten is your own passing.
