And a chamber counted among the graves—

I spent the night in it, compelled by inescapable fate,

On a night of excessive heat,

Like sheep’s heads in the oven—

Sealed shut, plastered with clay, and stoked with fire.

    Its mosquitoes swoop like vultures,

Or like gray goshawks and falcons.

They do to faces and backs

What the spears of al-Khatt do to throats.

Their sounds in the pitch-black darkness

Resemble the cry of the waterwheel.

So we remained in misery and ruin,

And in every perilous, dreaded plight,

Until its dawn came to us with light.

So I tasted death and resurrection.
