A house like my chest and my livelihood,

cramped, like my frame and my disposition.

I filled it, despite the emaciation

I bore, my sickness, and my thinness.

So one limb pressed tightly against another

of mine, and vein against vein,

until, inside it, this very nearly happened:

my ankle shook hands with the crown of my head.

    So my tongue cannot

turn in the middle of my mouth.

And if I belched inside it,

it would not pass beyond my throat.

I was safe in it from dea-

th, though it keeps strangling me,

because my soul did not fi-

    nd room to ascend.
