A crescent on a bough on a sand dune;
A crescent in a sheath amidst the dunes
His eye's sidelong glances are a snare for hearts.
Its glance ensnares hearts with subtle snares
أعفُّI abstain عنfrom الكبائرmajor sins فيهwith him جُهديas best I can
أعفُّ عن الكبائر فيه جُهدي
وأسمحand I allow myself بالصغيرthe lesser منof الذنوبsins
وأسمح بالصغير من الذنوب
I abstain from major sins with him as best I can,
I spare no effort pardoning mortal sins
And allow myself the lesser sins.
And gently smile at errors and white lies
وأرشُفُand I sip منهfrom him ثَغْراa mouth كالأَقاحِيlike daisies
وأرشُفُ منه ثَغْرا كالأَقاحِي
وأَلزَمand I clasp منهfrom him قَدّاa figure كالقَضيبlike a bough
وأَلزَم منه قَدّا كالقَضيب
And I sip his daisy-like lips,
I yearn to sip its wine-hued lips’ pure draughts
And clasp his bough-like figure.
And make its bow-like waist myystick guide

And I behold the sun of his brow whenever
When midst the cleavage of its robes I spy
It appears amid the spheres of necklines.
The sunburst of its cheeks’ dawn-tinted dyes

So, in meeting him, I am safe from separation,
With hopes of union I acquiescence find
And I win a conversation without a watcher.
To temporal parting, being satisfied

As Egypt’s tribes found refuge and relief
Through Shahanshah from the pain of calamities.
Through her Shahanshah from war’s plague and strife

He is the king without whose bounty
That king whose auspices make time befriend
Time would not have been kind to a man of letters.
