ماتَdied الحَياءُmodesty وَماتَand died الرُعبُterror وَالرَهَبُand dread
ماتَ الحَياءُ وَماتَ الرُعبُ وَالرَهَبُ
The three died when Muttalib died.
When Muttalib died, three things died along
Modesty died, and terror and dread died.
Modesty, awe, and reverence were gone
لِلَّهِto God أَربَعَةٌfour قَدindeed ضَمَّهاenclosed them كَفَنٌa shroud
لِلَّهِ أَربَعَةٌ قَد ضَمَّها كَفَنٌ

أَضحى يُعَزّى بِها الاِسلامُ وَالعَرَبُ
To God belong four whom a single shroud enclosed;
With his shroud, four virtues now belong
For them, Islam and the Arabs now receive condolences.
To console Islam and the Arabs from now on

دَمعاً يَدومُ لَها ما دامَتِ الحِقَبُ
O day of Muttalib, you have turned our eyes
O day when Muttalib passed away
Into tears that remain with them as long as the ages endure.
Our eyes now shed tears that are here to stay

بِالتُربِ مُنذُ اِستَوى مِن فَوقِكَ التُربُ
These cheeks of Qahtan's sons have clung
The cheeks of Qahtan's sons are now pressed
To the dust since the dust settled above you.
Against the soil where your soil now does rest

So depart as the morning rainclouds depart, as long as they pour
Go now where the paths of mourning lead
Rain upon the earth, or as long as the grasses grow green.
Where tears have flowed or grass is green indeed
