And once among them, in the Hijaz and among its people,
were bold raiders, slaughtering camels through the lean years.

The hardship of the years shunned their neighborhood,
so even the fiercest ember could not scorch them.

A sanctuary no calamities could sweep away, and faces
that shine with prosperity in the darkness.

When they led in horses ablaze with lances,
they were stokers of death's embers and engulfing strife.

Sumayya, among the foolish and the filthy.

Cease your reproach over the Prophet's family, for they
are my loved ones as long as they live, and worthy of my trust.

I shall earnestly restrain myself from disputing with them;
the tears I endure are enough for me.

So, my soul, take comfort; then, my soul, rejoice!
For all that is coming is not far away.

And do not despair at tyranny's span, for I
seem to see it already proclaiming its final end.

So if the All-Merciful brings my lifetime close to that day,
and prolongs my life until the day of my death,

I shall find relief and leave myself no choking grief,
and slake my blade and spear with their blood.

I try to move the sun from its resting place,
and make solid stones hear.

All I can gain from them is to return with choking grief,
moving back and forth between the breast and the throat.

When I speak what is right, they reject it with wrong,
and cover established truth with specious doubts.

You would think the ribs' wide space had grown cramped
because of the violent sighs they have been made to hold.
