زَمَني بِمُطَّلِبٍ سُقِيَت زَمانا

زَمَني بِمُطَّلِبٍ سُقِيَت زَمانا

ما كُنتَ إِلّا رَوضَةً وَجِبانا

ما كُنتَ إِلّا رَوضَةً وَجِبانا

My days with Muttalib—may that time be blessed with rain!

My time with you was a garden I was watered with desire

You were nothing but a garden and open plains.

You were nothing but a meadow and affection

كُلُّ النَدى إِلّا نَداكَ تَكَلُّفٌ

كُلُّ النَدى إِلّا نَداكَ تَكَلُّفٌ

لَم أَرضَ بَعدَكَ كائِناً مَن كانا

لَم أَرضَ بَعدَكَ كائِناً مَن كانا

All generosity except yours is affectation.

All the dew but yours is pretense

Since you, I have been satisfied with no one, whoever he may be.

I was pleased by none after you, whoever they were

أَصلَحَتَني بِالبِرِّ بَل أَفسَدَتَني

أَصلَحَتَني بِالبِرِّ بَل أَفسَدَتَني

فَتَرَكتَني أَتَسَخَّطُ الاِحسانا

فَتَرَكتَني أَتَسَخَّطُ الاِحسانا

You set me right with kindness—rather, you spoiled me.

You corrected me with righteousness, but rather corrupted me

And so you left me resenting kindness.

So you left me, despite kindness, discontent
