إِنَّما العَيشُ في مُنادَمَةِ الإِخ

إِنَّما العَيشُ في مُنادَمَةِ الإِخ

وانِ لا في الجُلوسِ عِندَ الكَعابِ

وانِ لا في الجُلوسِ عِندَ الكَعابِ

Life is found only in drinking with

True living is in companionship with friends,

friends, not in sitting beside the full-breasted maiden.

Not in sitting with the drunkards.

وَبِصَرفٍ كَأَنَّها أَلسُنُ البَر

وَبِصَرفٍ كَأَنَّها أَلسُنُ البَر

قِ إِذا اِستَعرَضَت رَقيقَ السَحابِ

قِ إِذا اِستَعرَضَت رَقيقَ السَحابِ

And in unmixed wine, as though it were tongues of

And with a cup that seems to be

lightning when they sweep across thin clouds.

The gleaming clouds when they shine with rain.

إِن تَكونوا تَرَكتُمُ لَذَّةِ العَي

إِن تَكونوا تَرَكتُمُ لَذَّةِ العَي

شِ حِذارَ العِقابِ يَومَ العِقابِ

شِ حِذارَ العِقابِ يَومَ العِقابِ

If you have abandoned the pleasure of

If you have abandoned the joys of life,

life for fear of punishment on the Day of Punishment,

Beware the punishment on the Day of Reckoning,

فَدَعوني وَما أَلَذُّ وَأَهوى

فَدَعوني وَما أَلَذُّ وَأَهوى

وَاِدفَعوا بي في نَحرِ يَومِ الحِسابِ

وَاِدفَعوا بي في نَحرِ يَومِ الحِسابِ

then leave me to what I delight in and desire,

So leave me to what is most delightful and beloved,

and thrust me into the throat of the Day of Reckoning.

And on the Day of Reckoning, let my reckoning be.
