    I am blamed for my hatred of something between a snake

    And a hyena and a crocodile, engulfing you from the sea.

    وَصَفحَتُها لَمّا بَدَت سَطوَةُ الدَهرِ

    She evokes vanished bliss in the ugliness of her face;

    And her countenance, when revealed, is the ravaging force of time.

    She is throbbing pain in the joints when you are alone,

    And an offshoot of pleurisy you have clasped to your breast.

    وَإِن بُرقِعَت فَالقَفرُ في غايَةِ القَفرِ

    When she unveils, she is a burning pain to your eyes;

    And if she is veiled, she is desolation at the height of desolation.

    And if she speaks, she is every calamity,

    In full measure, bringing a blow that breaks the back.

    Speech like pulling a molar or plucking a mustache,

    And coquetry like crushing the nose—my patience is exhausted by it.

    And she parts her lips to reveal yellowed teeth—may I be spared her talk!—

    And the two mountains of Tayy, and the two pyramids of Egypt.
