He once was told to desist, then bade others desist when he himself did.
He used to forbid, so he forbade when he was done,
And youth’s dark veils lifted from him.
And the oblivions of youth departed from him.

He cast off frivolity and began to let trail
He cast off playfulness and took to wearing
For wisdom, the hems of a tunic and cloak.
Ample robes, excelling in virtuous behavior.
كَيفَhow يَرجوdoes he hope for البيضَfair women مَنone who أَوَّلُهُhis foremost part (head)
فيin عُيونِthe eyes of البيضِfair women شَيبٌgray hair وَجَلاand baldness
How can a man hope for fair women, when his head
How can one whose beginning is white hope for white hairs -
In fair women’s eyes is gray hair and baldness?
In the eyes of the white-haired his beginning is but folly!
كانَhe was كُحلاًkohl لِمَآقيهاfor the corners of her eyes فَقَدthen indeed
صارَhe became بِالشَيبِthrough gray hair لِعَينَيهاfor her two eyes قَذىa mote
He was kohl for the corners of her eyes; but now
Once the collyrium for her eyes, now with his white hair
Through gray hair, he has become a mote in her eyes.
He has become a speck that vexes her eyes!
