اللَهُGod يَعلَمُknows أَنَّنيthat I ماnot سَرَّنيdelighted me
اللَهُ يَعلَمُ أَنَّني ما سَرَّني
شَيءٌanything كَطارِقَةِlike the nighttime arrival of الضُيوفِthe guests النُزَّلِwho come to stay
شَيءٌ كَطارِقَةِ الضُيوفِ النُزَّلِ
God knows that I have never been delighted
God knows I've never been as glad
By anything as much as by the nighttime arrival of guests who come to stay.
As when guests suddenly arrive -
ماnot زِلتُI ceased بِالتَرحيبِwith welcoming حَتّىuntil خِلتُنيI imagined myself
ما زِلتُ بِالتَرحيبِ حَتّى خِلتُني
ضَيفاًa guest لَهُhis وَالضَيفَand the guest رَبَّmaster of المَنزِلِthe house
ضَيفاً لَهُ وَالضَيفَ رَبَّ المَنزِلِ
I kept on welcoming until I imagined myself
So I can greet them, serve them, have them stay,
His guest, and the guest the master of the house.
And be their guest, though lord of this abode.
