    Cheer me, you two, with music and wine,

    And with a guest arriving by night, seeking hospitality.

    The guest's tones are sweeter to us

    Than the bleating of sheep or a she-camel's bellowing.

    We lodge the guest, whenever he arrives, in

    The heart's core and the recesses of the bosom.

    Many a merchant guest I have caused to lose—

    I sold him food and bought praise.

    إِنَّ بُغضَ المالِ مِن حُبِّ العُلا

    Despise wealth when you have amassed it;

    Indeed, hatred of wealth springs from love of eminence.

    حَبَّذا تِلكَ خِلالاً حَبَّذا

    Life is but five things;

    How splendid those things are—how splendid!

    Serving the guest, and a cup of delight,

    And a drinking companion, and a young woman, and song.

    And if you lack one of them,

    Life dwindles as desire dwindles.
