Behold, O grave whose site is far from home,

In Tus, may the night clouds pour rain upon you.

Within you lie knowledge and piety; within you, forbearance and wisdom.

Within you lie religion and worldly life, and you are their guarantor.

    وَلَكِنَّني فيما دَهاكَ ظَنينُ

    Death came upon the best of the prophets, and he ascended;

But I am suspicious about what befell you.

And before you, Musa—how many signs appeared through him!

Then he came to suffer poison while he was a prisoner.

Alas for you two slain by treachery! You were made to drink

Poison through it, and the hidden plot comes to light.

I shall weep for you both all my life, and curse a betrayer,

And whoever had given instructions—and the tale has many branches.
