Baghdad was the abode of kings,
Baghdad, abode of kings, once was
Until what befell her befell her.
Until it was ruined by him who ruined it

No joy of kingship that departed from her
No kingdom’s joy has been absent from it
Returned to a town other than her.
Except it returned to a land other than it

No one who saw was gladdened by Surra Man Ra;
No one rejoiced in the joy of someone
Rather, she is misery to whoever sees her.
Rather it is misery for whoever sees it

May my Lord hasten her ruin,
My Lord hastened its destruction
To spite the one who built her.
Despite the nose of him who built it
