وَمُغَنٍّ إِن تَغَنّى

وَمُغَنٍّ إِن تَغَنّى

أَورَثَ النَدمانَ هَمّا

أَورَثَ النَدمانَ هَمّا

And a singer—if he sings,

A singer, though he sing well,

bequeaths sorrow to the drinking companion.

Will leave behind him only woe.

أَحسَنُ الأَقوامِ حالاً

أَحسَنُ الأَقوامِ حالاً

فيهِ مَن كانَ أَصَمّا

فيهِ مَن كانَ أَصَمّا

The best off among the people

Best off are they who cannot hear,

in his company is whoever is deaf.

And have no skill in song to show.
