عَلىagainst الكُرهِunwillingness ماindeed (emphatic) فارَقتُI parted with أَحمَدَAhmad وَاِنطَوىand closed
عَلَيهِover him بِناءٌa structure جَندَلٌstone وَرَزينُand heavy
Against my will I parted with Ahmad, and there closed
over him a heavy structure of stone.
وَأَسكَنتُهُand I housed him بَيتاًa house خَسيساًmeager مَتاعُهُits furnishings
وَإِنّيand indeed I عَلىdespite رُغميmy forced submission بِهِwith him لَضَنينُsurely loath to part
And I lodged him in a house whose furnishings are meager,
and, though forced to yield, I am loath to part with him.
وَلَولاand were it not for التَأَسّيtaking consolation بِالنَبِيِّin the Prophet وَأَهلِهِand his family
لَأَسبَلَwould surely pour مِنfrom عَينيmy eye عَلَيهِfor him شُؤونُstreams of tears
And were it not for taking solace in the Prophet and his family,
streams of tears would pour from my eye for him.
هُوَhe النَفسُthe soul إِلّاexcept أَنَّthat آلَthe family of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
لَهُمfor them دونَin preference to نَفسيmy own self فيin الفُؤادِthe heart كَمينُa hidden place
He is my very soul; yet Muhammad's family
have a hidden place in my heart, dearer than my own self.
أَضَرَّcaused harm بِهِمto them إِرثُthe inheritance of النَبِيِّthe Prophet فَأَصبَحواso they became
يُساهِمُcasts lots فيهِمamong them ميتَةٌdeath وَمَنونُand doom
The Prophet's inheritance harmed them, so now
death and doom cast lots among them.
دَعَتهُمcalled them ذِئابٌwolves مِنfrom أُمَيَّةَUmayya وَاِنتَحَتand bore down
عَلَيهِمupon them دِراكاًin succession أَزمَةٌhardship وَسِنونُand famine years
Wolves of Umayya called them, and there bore down
upon them, in succession, hardship and years of famine.
وَعاثَتand wreaked havoc بَنوthe sons of العَبّاسِal-Abbas فيin الدينِreligion عيثَةًa devastation
تَحَكَّمَruled at will فيهاin it ظالِمٌan oppressor وَظَنينُand one under suspicion
And the sons of al-Abbas wreaked havoc in religion,
where an oppressor and a man under suspicion ruled at will.
وَسَمَّواand they named رَشيداًRashid (rightly guided) لَيسَnot فيهِمamong them لِرُشدِهِfor his right guidance
وَهاand behold ذاكَthat one مَأمونٌMa'mun (trusted) وَذاكَand that one أَمينُAmin (trustworthy)
And they named one Rashid, not for his right guidance among them,
and behold, that one is Ma'mun, and that one Amin.
فَماso not قُبِلَتwas accepted بِالرُشدِas rightly guided مِنهُمfrom them رِعايَةٌstewardship
وَلاand not لِوَلِيٍّfor a ruler بِالأَمانَةِas trustworthy دينُreligious faith
So no stewardship of theirs was accepted as rightly guided,
nor any ruler's faith as trustworthy.
رَشيدُهُمtheir Rashid غاوٍastray وَطِفلاهُand his two children بَعدَهُafter him
لِهَذاfor this one رَزاياcalamities دونَin contrast to ذاكَthat one مُجونُdebauchery
Their Rashid is astray, and his two children after him:
for this one, calamities; for the other, debauchery.
أَلاah! أَيُّهاO you القَبرُthe grave الغَريبُremote مَحَلُّهُits location
بِطوسٍin Tus عَلَيكَupon you السارِياتُthe night-moving clouds هُتونُpouring steadily
Ah, you grave, whose resting place is remote,
in Tus—may the night clouds pour their rain upon you.
شَكَكتُI doubted فَماso not أَدريI know أَمَسقِيُّwere you given to drink? شَربَةٍa draught
فَأَبكيكَso I would weep for you أَمor رَيبُthe chance stroke of الرَدىdeath فَيَهونُso it is easier to bear
I am uncertain, and do not know: were you given a draught,
so I should weep for you, or was it death's chance blow, easier to bear?
وَأَيُّهُماand whichever of the two ماever (emphatic) قُلتُI say إِنif قُلتَyou say شَربَةٌa draught
وَإِنand if قُلتَyou say مَوتٌdeath إِنَّهُindeed it لَقَمينُsurely plausible
Whichever of the two I say—if you say 'a draught,'
or if you say 'death'—it is surely plausible.
أَياoh! عَجَباًhow strange مِنهُمof them يُسَمّونَكَthey call you الرِضاal-Rida (contentment)
وَتَلقاكَand greets you مِنهُمfrom them كَلحَةٌa scowl وَغُضونُand furrows
How strange of them! They call you al-Rida,
yet from them you meet a scowl and furrowed brows.
أَتَعجَبُdo you marvel? لِلأَجلافِat the boors أَنthat يَتَخَيَّفواthey whittle away at
مَعالِمَthe landmarks of دينِthe religion of اللَهِGod وَهوَthough it is مُبينُclear
Do you marvel that the boors should whittle away
the landmarks of God's religion, though it is clear?
لَقَدindeed سَبَقَتhad already come فيهِمamong them بِفَضلِكَof your excellence آيَةٌa sign
لَدَيَّto me وَلَكِنand yet ماno هُناكَthere يَقينُcertainty
Indeed, a sign of your excellence among them had already come
to me; and yet there is no certainty there.
