صَبّحانيgreet me at dawn, you two بوجههِwith his face القَمريِّmoonlike
وأصبحانيand give me a morning draught, you two بالسلسبيلِwith sweet-flowing Salsabil الرّويِّthirst-quenching
You two, greet my morning with his moonlike face,
He greeted me with his moonlike face
and give me a morning draught of thirst-quenching Salsabil.
And greeted me with his soft curly hair
بدرُa full moon ليلٍof night يَسعىhastens بشمسِbearing a sun نهارٍof day
فشهيٌّso a delightful one ينتابُناvisits us بِشهيِّwith a delightful one
A full moon of night hastens, bearing a sun of day:
A full moon of the night running after the sun of daytime
a delight visits us bearing a delight.
So it was marvelous, the meeting of the moon and sun
فاعجباso marvel, you two لاجتماعِat the union of بدرٍa full moon وشمسٍand a sun
فيin سماءَيtwo heavens of سَناradiance كمالٍperfection سَنيِّsplendid
So marvel, you two, at a full moon and a sun united
In my sky, perfecting its beauty
in twin heavens radiant with splendid perfection.
The moon's brilliance was clad in brilliance
مِنfrom بهاهُhis beauty البدريِّmoonlike تكسىshe is clothed بهاءًsplendor
والبهاءُand the splendor البدريُّmoonlike بالشّمسيِّwith sunlike splendor
From his moonlike beauty she is clothed in splendor,
And the moon's brilliance with the sun's
and his moonlike splendor in her sunlike glow.
If her face gleamed golden
انif تبدّتshe appeared بوجهِهاwith her face ذَهبياًgolden
قلتُI said هذاthis مِنfrom وجهِهِhis face الفِضيِّsilvery
If her face appears golden,
I'd say it was from his golden complexion
I say, 'This is from his silvery face.'
Or if her cheek showed rosy
أوor تراءتshe appeared بخدِّهاwith her cheek نَوفَرِيّاًwater-lily-like
قلتُI said هذاthis مِنfrom خَدّهِhis cheek الورديّrose-colored
Or if her cheek appears water-lily-like,
I'd say it was from his rosy cheek
I say, 'This is from his rosy cheek.'
Never before did we see on his cheeks a rose
ماnot رأيناwe saw مِنfrom قبلِbefore خدِّيهِhis two cheeks ورداًa rose
يانعاًblooming فوقَupon عارضٍa cheek سَوسَنيِّlily-like
Before his cheeks we had never seen a rose
Blooming over a lily-white cheek
blooming upon a lily-like cheek.
How can the tender violet be plucked from it
كيفhow يُجنىis plucked البنفسجُthe violet الغضُّtender منهfrom him
وهوwhile it يُحمىis guarded بالنّاظِرby the eye النّرجسيِّnarcissus-like
How can the tender violet be plucked from him,
While it's protected by the narcissus-like glance?
when it is guarded by a narcissus-like eye?
Oh passion for glory made you deafen my heart
ياO ولوعاًone enamored بالنَّبلِof arrows أصميتَyou fatally struck قلبيmy heart
بسهامٍwith arrows منfrom لحظِكَyour glance البابليِّBabylonian
O lover of arrows, you have slain my heart
With arrows from your Babylon-like glance
with arrows from your Babylonian glance.
You shot from your frowning eyebrows some arrows
رَشَقتهاshot them مِنfrom حاجبيكَyour two eyebrows قِسيّbows
مُنتضاةٌdrawn أحسنhow fine! بهاwith them مِنas قِسيِّbows
Bows from your eyebrows have shot them,
More beautiful than actual arrows
drawn—how splendid they are as bows!
So my heart is between an ardent arrow and a plucked rose
ففؤاديso my heart باللَّحظِthrough the glance والخدِّand the cheek منهof him
بينَbetween سهمٍan arrow جانٍwounding ووردٍand a rose جنيِّfreshly plucked
Thus, through his glance and cheek, my heart
Like my life, intense with comfort
lies between a wounding arrow and a freshly plucked rose.
Oh graceful one, I'd sacrifice the graceful one
فهوso it ميتٌdead بذاthrough that وحيٌّand alive بهذاthrough this
مِثلُlike عيشيmy life شديدهُits hardship بالرَّخيِّwith ease
It is dead from that, and alive from this,
Who bends like the withering samhar plant
like my life, its hardship mingled with its ease.
Give it to me moderately with a cold twist
ياO رشيقاًgraceful one فديتُهI would ransom him مِنas a رشيقٍgraceful one
يَتثنىhe sways كالذابلِlike a slender lance السّمهريِّSamharī
O graceful one—my life for him, how graceful!—
Of your refreshing, cool waist
swaying like a slender Samharī lance.
Give it to me in the joy of the wine-cup which makes clear
عاطنيhand me صِرفهاits unmixed draught بصرفٍwith a pure draught برُودٍcooling
خَصِرٍcold منfrom رُضابكَyour saliva البَرديِّhail-like
Hand me its unmixed draught with a pure, cooling draught,
Between a merry and a happy vine branch
cold, from your hail-like saliva.
Rise, for the darkness' gloom has spread
عاطنيهاhand it to me فيin بهجةthe splendor of الكأسِthe goblet تُجلىit is unveiled
بينَbetween عودٍa bough شادٍsinging وعودٍand a lute شديِّtuneful
Hand it to me, unveiled in the goblet's splendor,
Under which is the glowing ember's red heat
between a singing bough and a tuneful lute.
The dawn's spear pierced the night's liver
قمrise فهاso behold فحمةُthe charcoal of الظّلامِdarkness استطارتhas flared up
تحتهاbeneath it جمرةُan ember الضِّياءِof light الضّويِّradiant
Rise! Behold the charcoal of darkness: there has flared
Like the Kamees tribe's spear's stab to the Kamees' liver
beneath it an ember of radiant light.
It appears, polished in gentle dripping
حَربةُthe spear of الفجرِdawn أنفذتpierced through مَنحرَthe throat of اللّيthe night (first part)
لِcompletion of 'night' كطعنِlike the piercing of الكميِّthe armored warrior نحرَthe throat of الكميِّthe armored warrior
Dawn's spear has pierced the throat of night,
Radiant from its pure spring
as an armored warrior pierces another warrior's throat.
So blackness upon redness and whiteness
تَتراءىit appears مصقولةًpolished فيamid رشاشٍa spray
مُشرقٍgleaming منfrom نجيعهِits blood المَشرفيِّMashrafī; a sword epithet
It appears polished amid a spray
Like the embroidered, adorned fabric
gleaming with its Mashrafī blood.
Or as if the stream were wrapped in tar
فاسودادٌso blackness فوقَabove ابيضاضِwhitening احمرارٍredness
كالنّسيجِlike the fabric المُشّهرِvariegated الخَسرويKhusrawian
So blackness lies over redness turning white,
Dripping from its clear spring
like the variegated fabric of Khusraw.
And the trees' singing in the morning clarity
أوor كأنَّas though الجاديَّsaffron غُلِفَwas coated بالكاwith camphor (first part)
فورِcompletion of 'camphor' مِنfrom تحتِbeneath ندِّهِits incense العَنبريِّambergris-scented
Or as though saffron were coated with camphor,
Chanting with their temple-like melody
beneath its ambergris-scented incense.
Whenever the breeze makes a trill
وقيانُand singing maidens الأشجارِof the trees فيin وَضحِthe brightness of الأسdaybreaks (first part)
حارِcompletion of 'daybreaks' تشدُوthey sing بلحنِهاwith their melody المَعبدِيِّMaʿbad-like
And the trees' singing maidens, in the clear light of daybreak,
The leaves flutter from the branches' shaking
sing in their Maʿbad-like strain.
With tweets that mute the son of Sareeh
كلّماwhenever طرّبَtrilled الهزارُthe nightingale هديلاًa cooing song
حنّتِmoaned الورقُthe gray doves مِنfrom شجاهُits plaintive song الشّجيِّheart-stirring
Whenever the nightingale trills a cooing song,
And singing that sings instead of the son of Ghanee
the gray doves moan at its heart-stirring plaint,
Arabized in their tune about passion
بتغاريدَwith trills تُخرِسُsilence ابنَIbn (son of) سُريحٍSurayḥ
وغناءٍand singing يُغنيdispenses عنwith ابنِIbn (son of) غنيِّGhanī
with trills that silence Ibn Surayḥ,
Westernized in its foreign melody
and song that dispenses with Ibn Ghanī.
In a meter beyond numerating
مُعرباتٌexpressing clearly بلحنِهاthrough their melody عنof غرامٍpassion
مُغرباتٌworking wonders فيin لحنهِits melody الأعجميِّnon-Arabic
Expressing passion through their melody,
Neither set nor open nor twisted
they work wonders in its non-Arabic strain.
Give it to me, for the blossoms of spikenard
بحسابٍby reckoning لاnot بالدَّساتينِby frets تُحصىthey are counted
لاno ولاnor مُطلقٍan open string ولاnor ملويِّa tightened string
They are measured by counting, not by frets—
Have appeared in the radiance of its dawn
no, nor by open strings, nor tightened ones.
So the gardens' mouths smile good news
واسقنيهاand give it to me to drink فقدfor already بداhas appeared زَهرُthe bloom of النّوflowers (first part)
رِcompletion of 'flowers' علىupon نُورِthe light of صُبحِهاits morning الأزهريِّradiant
And pour me wine: the bloom of flowers has appeared
For the crying of the lovesick and the tattooed
in the light of its radiant morning.
And the tongue of Spring praises it
فثغورُso the mouths of الرّياضِthe gardens تضحكُlaugh بِشراًjoyfully
لبكاءِat the weeping of الوليِّthe following rain والوَسميِّand the first seasonal rain
The mouths of the gardens smile joyfully
In the phraseology known to al-Mandali
at the weeping of the later and the first rains.
Whenever the winds walk
ولسانُand the tongue of الرّبيعِspring يُثنيspeaks praise عليهof it
بعبارتِin the language of عرفهِits fragrance المَندليِّMandalī; aloeswood-scented
And spring's tongue sings its praise
Between a bloomer from its plants and flowers
in the language of its Mandalī fragrance.
Walking between fresh and tender
كلّماwhenever راحتwent forth الرِّياحُthe winds تَمشّىstroll
بينَamong زاهٍa flourishing one منof نبتهِits vegetation وزهيِّand a splendid one
Whenever the winds go out strolling
Witty mint and wise basil
among its plants, flourishing and splendid,
Give it to me as if it were the glow of the sun
تَتمشّىthey wander ماemphatic particle بينَbetween تِبرٍraw gold ونَدٍّand fragrant incense
مِنof عرارٍyellow ʿarār blossoms ذاكٍfragrant وَرندٍand laurel ذكيِّsweet-scented
they wander between raw gold and fragrant incense,
Appearing from its Aries burj
of fragrant ʿarār blossoms and sweet-scented laurel.
For in its cup it is like fire and water
عاطنيهاhand it to me كأنّهاas though it were وَهجُthe blaze of الشّمthe sun (first part)
سِcompletion of 'sun' تبدّتit appeared مِنfrom بُرجِهاits zodiacal house الحَمليِّof Aries
Hand it to me, as though it were the sun's blaze,
Tied down by the power of strong hands
appearing from its house of Aries.
The melting fire dissolved in frozen water

قُيّداthe two were bound باقتدارِby the mastery of أيدٍstrength قَوِيِّmighty
For in its goblet it is like fire and water,
So marvel at the solid melting
bound together by masterful, mighty power.
Gold dissolved in a clay jug
ذائبُthe molten part of النارِfire حلَّhas settled فيin جامدِthe solid part of الthe
ماءِwater فاعجبso marvel بالذّائبِat the molten thing الجَمديِّice-like
Molten fire has settled in solid
And took on the essence of pearls
water—so marvel at this icy liquid!
Oh felled by wine-cups, take it as a first drink
ذهبٌgold حلَّhas settled فيin اناءِa vessel of لُجينٍsilver
فتحلّىthen it adorned itself باللؤلؤِwith pearls الحَببيِّbubble-like
Gold has settled in a vessel of silver,
To take away cares with the golden drink
and decked itself with bubble-pearls.
When it flowed in the body it only flowed
ياO صريعَone felled by الكاساتِthe goblets خُذهاtake it سُلافاًchoice wine
تُذهبِit will dispel الهمَّcare بالسّناwith radiance الذّهَبيِّgolden
O one felled by goblets, take it as choice wine:
With healing from every chronic illness
it will banish care with its golden radiance.
But the respite of youth is splendor
ماnot تمشّتit coursed فيthrough الجسمِthe body الاexcept تمشّتit coursed
بشفاءٍwith healing مِنfrom كلِّevery داءٍdisease دويِّgrievous
It never courses through the body without flowing
So enjoy it by plundering of a happy life
with a cure for every grievous disease.
It's as if youth has quickly passed

Youth's allotted span is nothing but splendor;
And old age came with its decrepit prohibition
so seize it by plundering a blissful life.
And after that expect forbearance
فكأنfor it is as though قدalready مَضىhas passed الشّبابُyouth نهيّاًin its fullness

For it is as though youth has already passed in its fullness,
Taken from the Forbearing Most High
and gray hair has arrived with the wisdom of old age.

And after that, expect forbearance
drawn from the Forbearing, the Most High.
