سِرُّthe secret سَرِّdelight الحُبِّof love مُشتَهِرُwidely known
فلماذاso why فيهِwithin it أَستترُI hide myself
The secret of love's delight is widely known;
The secret of love's secret is well known
so why do I hide within it?
So why would I conceal it?
كيفَhow يخفَىis hidden جمرُthe embers جاحمةٍof a blazing fire
فيin رياضٍgardens راضَهاtamed them النَّظرُthe gaze
How can the embers of a blazing fire be hidden
How can the embers of an ardent love
in gardens tamed by the gaze?
Be hidden in gardens that delight the eyes?
لاno إزارٌwaistcloth عنكَfrom you يَحجبُهاconceals it
فيin تعاليهاits rising ولاand no وَزَرُrefuge
No garment conceals it from you,
No robe can veil it in its loftiness
as it rises, nor does any refuge.
Neither cloak nor finery
إنماonly رَوحُsolace المحبِّof the lover لَظىًflame
فهيso it بالأَرواحِby souls تَستعِرُis kindled
The lover's solace is nothing but flame,
The soul of a lover is aflame
so it is kindled by souls.
So among souls it kindles fires
نفسُهُhis soul فيin نارِthe fire شِرَّتهِof his ardor
فلذاso for that reason أَنفاسُهُhis breaths شَررُsparks
His soul is in the fire of his ardor;
Its being burns in the heat of passion
thus his breaths are sparks.
Thus its breaths are sparks
إنَّindeed بحرَthe sea الحُبِّof love ذوpossessed of غَرَرٍperil
والمنجِّيand the deliverer ذلكَthat الغَرَرُthe peril
Indeed, the sea of love is full of peril,
The sea of love has hidden depths
and that very peril is the deliverer.
And only diving saves from its peril
فلدائيso for my ailment خُصتُهُI plunged into it (uncertain reading) خطراًat peril
إذsince دوائيmy remedy ذلكَthat الخَطرُthe peril
So for my ailment I plunged into it at peril,
So for my malady it was a risk I took
for that peril is my remedy.
Since my cure was in that risk
فأَرانيso it showed me قَهرُهُits subduing power مَلِكاًa king
دونَهُbeneath him الأَملاكُthe kings تُقتَهَرُare subdued
Thus its subduing power showed me a king,
So it made me a king whom angels obey
beneath whom kings are subdued.
And before whom monarchs bow down

أَنthat يَرىbehold أَنوارَهُhis lights البَصرُsight
A king whose majesty is too exalted
A magnificent king whose majesty
for sight to behold his lights.
Dazzles sights that behold his light

One through whom lessons have arisen,
The One by whom lessons are made clear
in them a lesson for humankind.
For people to take wisdom from

لمnot يَكُنwould exist جودٌbounty لهfor it أَثَرُan effect
A king without whose care
A generous king who, but for his grace,
no bounty would have an effect.
Would have no bounty or trace

No—neither earth nor mountain,
Neither earth nor mountain nor sea
No—neither sea nor river,
Nor river would exist but for He

Nor the essence of air, nor the fire
the sky's fire resting above it.
In the atmosphere above made to dwell

No—nor a star ever seen,
No star seen forever and ever
receding within the girdle of the sky;
In the expanse of space unfurled

Neither fixed stars nor planets
No—nor the radiant wandering stars.
When fate counts the rounds they plod

No—nor all the celestial spheres,
Nor any soul stirred to motion
as fate reckons their course.
To grasp things or let them slip by
لاno ولاand no نفسٌa soul محرَّكةٌset in motion

No—nor a soul set in motion,
Nor angels ascending on high
perceiving things or leaving them aside.
Or descending by His decree
لاno ولاand no الأَملاكُthe angels صاعدةًascending

His essential knowledge is generous
or descending with revelation from him.

His operative knowledge is endowed with bounty;
His essence in benefaction is a hand
every bounty pours forth from it.
Whose goodwill universally reigns

In generous deeds, his essence is a hand
It is a face in beauty, for lo
whose outpouring of goodness is renowned.

And it is a countenance of beauty; now
Perfect in every perfection
perception stands dazzled before it.
So minds cannot rise in depicting its height

My speech falls short of praising you, O
So in apology I stand mute
you in whom the praise-singers take pride.
Excuse those who rise in regret
فلهذاso for this reason قمتُI have risen معتذراًapologizing
فاعفُso pardon عَمَّنthe one who قامَhas risen يَعتذِرُapologizes
For this reason I have risen to apologize;
These words are so deficient
so pardon the one who has risen to apologize.
How can mortals speak Your glory?

These words are inadequate;
so with what can humankind speak?
