ياO مَنwho تردَّىrobed itself بالجلالِin majesty جمالُهHis beauty
ولهand He has مُنof الأَنوارِthe lights حُجبإveils تُبهَرdazzle
O You whose beauty is robed in majesty,
O You whose beauty is adorned with majesty,
and whose veils of light dazzle,
And from whose light veils dazzle the eyes,
ماليI have no اليكَto You وسلةإa means of approach أَنجوI may be saved بهاby it
يومَon the day المَعادِof the Return إذاwhen أَزمَّgrows oppressive المَحشرُthe gathering
I have no means of drawing near to You by which I may be saved
What have I to offer You on the Day of Reckoning,
on the Day of Return, when the gathering grows oppressive.
When people throng together in terror?
إنيindeed I لمعترفٌsurely admitting بذنبيَto my sin غافِلٌheedless
فيماin what يُقرِّبُنيbrings me near إليكَto You مُقَصِّرُremiss
I do indeed confess my sin; I am heedless,
I confess my sin, heedless as I am
remiss in what brings me near to You.
Of that which would bring me closer to You.
لكنَّنيbut I أَرجوI hope لكلِّfor every كبيرةٍgrave sin
ثِقَتيmy trust بعفوكَin Your pardon إنّindeed عفوكَYour pardon أَكبرُgreater
Yet for every grievous sin I have hope;
But for every major sin, I trust in Your pardon,
my trust is in Your pardon; indeed, Your pardon is greater.
For truly, Your forgiveness is greater.
وإذاand when الملوكُkings تكثَّرتtake pride بعديدِهاin their numbers
أَلفيتنيYou found me بسواكَin anyone but You لاnot أَتكثّرُI take pride
And when kings take pride in their numbers,
When kings are many, with their many legions,
You find me taking pride in none but You.
I find none but You, and seek no multitudes.
واذاand when طَغَتthey transgress وبَغَتand act unjustly بماwith what خوَّلتَهاYou granted them
أقبلتُI turned نحوكَtoward You خاضعاًhumbly أَستغفرُI seek forgiveness
And when they transgress and oppress with what You have granted them,
And when they tyrannize through what You gave them,
I turn toward You humbly, seeking forgiveness.
I turn to You, humbly asking forgiveness.
ياO مالكاًmaster رقيّmy bondage وقلبيand my heart ذائبٌmelting
فيin حُبِّهِlove for Him بينَamong الأَنامِhumankind مُشَهَّرُpublicly known
O Master of my bondage, my heart is melting
O Gentle One, my heart melts
in love for Him, publicly known among humankind.
With love for You, known to all people.
ماnot الفقرُpoverty فيin الدنياthis world العذابُthe torment وإنّنماbut rather
الفقرُdeprivation منكَof You هوالعذابُit is the torment الأَظهرُmost evident
Poverty in this world is not the torment; rather,
Want in this world is not torment;
being bereft of You is the clearest torment.
Rather, want of You is the clearest agony.
إنَّindeed النهارَthe day بغيرِwithout وجهكَYour face مظلمٌdark
عنديto me وليليand my night مِنfrom بهائكَYour splendor نَيِّرُradiant
Indeed, the day without Your face is dark
The day is dark for me without Your face,
to me, while my night is radiant with Your splendor.
While my night shines through Your beauty.
أَشتاقُI long for وجهَكَYour face لاnot سواهُanything other than it إذاwhen غداcome to be
قومٌpeople تشوقُهمُstir them to longing الجِنانُthe gardens النّضَّرُverdant
I long for Your face, none other, when
At dawn, when others long for gardens,
people come to yearn for verdant gardens.
I yearn only for Your face, and no other.
وتروقنيand delights me منfrom ماءِwater حُبِّكَYour love شربةٌa draught
تُرويquenches الصَّدىthirst إنif راقَdelights غيريothers besides me الكوثرُal-Kawthar
And a draught of the water of Your love delights me,
A sip of the water of Your love
quenching thirst, even if al-Kawthar delights others.
Quenches me, though others seek Al-Kawthar.
ماليI have no رجاءٌhope فيin جِنانٍgardens زُخرِفتadorned
كلاno indeed ولاnor أَخشىI fear جحيماًhellfire تُسعَرُis set ablaze
I place no hope in gardens decked in splendor;
I have no hope in adorned gardens,
no, nor do I fear a hellfire set ablaze.
Nor do I fear a blazing Hell.
لكنbut رجائيmy hope أَنthat أَراكَI see You وخشيتيand my fear
مِنof أَنthat تُقبِّحَنيdisfigure me الذَّنوبُsins فأهجَرُand so I am forsaken
But my hope is to see You, and my fear
My only hope is to see You, my only fear,
is that sins may disfigure me, so that I am forsaken.
That my sins make me unworthy of Your vision.
ياO مَنwho تَفرَّدَstands alone بالبقاءِin everlasting existence فماand so no لهُHe has
نِدٌّa rival يُضاهيmatches أَوor شريكٌa partner يُذكَرُis mentioned
O You who alone endure forever, who have no
O You alone who endures, You have
rival to match You, nor any partner to be named.
No equal or partner who comes close.
أَنتَYou الجوادُthe Bountiful فماfor no يُقلِّلُdiminishes جودَهُHis bounty
ذنبٌa sin ولاnor الحسناتُgood deeds فيهin it تكثرُincrease
You are the Bountiful; Your bounty is not diminished
You are the Bountiful; sins do not diminish
by sin, nor increased by good deeds.
Your bounty, nor do good deeds increase it.
كُنbe ليfor me إذاwhen الرُّسلُthe messengers الكرامُthe noble تعاظمتdeemed too great
ذَنبيmy sin فظنَّتand so they thought أَنَّهُthat it لاnot يُغفَرُis forgiven
Stand by me when the noble messengers deem too great
When honored messengers despair
my sin, and think it will not be forgiven.
Of pardoning my sin, deeming it unforgivable,
فلأَنتَfor You indeed أَولىmore worthy بالتجاوزِof overlooking faults محسناًacting kindly
والعفوِand pardon عنfor أَهلِpeople of القنوطِdespair وأَجدَرُand more fitting
For You are surely more worthy to overlook faults, in kindness,
You are foremost in excusing and forgiving
and to pardon those in despair; it befits You more.
Those in despair, and You are best placed to pardon.
