O rider from the heights of Syria, borne swiftly

to the two Iraqs by night journeys and predawn hours,

You told me of haunts where so often were fulfilled

    the soul's desires and wishes.

Beside gardens watered by the rain clouds' bounty,

and adorned by tender blossoms and flowers.

Dew begrudged them a drink of its spittle,

so a cloud brimful of downpours drenched them lavishly.

The morning rain clouds wept upon them while they beamed,

and the wind passed through them, richly perfumed.

Oh, how lovely they were when their pavilions adorned them,

and fruit ripened in the tops of the great trees!

So they are a sky of green, within whose bounds

    bright stars appear, and moons.

O you who roused my passion after its repose,

and fanned the fire when the fire had died down,

You spoke to me while I was thirsty for news—

may your mouth never be shattered, for from me you draw refreshment.

For it is limpid water whose draughts are sweet,

and scum and murk have left it.

Repeat to one far away, far from the place he would visit,

your sweet tale—may your home never take you far away!

    انَّ الحديثَ عن الأحبابِ أسمارُ

    And console the soul for their absence with talk of them;

for talk of loved ones is evening conversation.
