O king of beauty, what has befallen you?

For your lot has fallen from the heights to the lowlands.

I deem the two sideburns ugly: they have robbed you of what

you alone among men possessed of beauty.

They both assailed you after a delay,

though long before you had been the one assailing others.

So they marred your beauty at its perfection

    and blunted your keen-edged youth,

as the full moon is eclipsed at its fullest,

and the heads of lances are shattered by thrusts.

So the once-admired cheeks now lie

in a coarse, striped cloak of encroaching hair,

like the white banners of Marwan,

whose radiance the rise of blackness concealed.
