Indeed, by Him whose pilgrims were the minds of the discerning,

bound for His well-frequented House, filled with His sublimest holiness:

they alighted there after long estrangement,

having entered pilgrim consecration, then circled it in pairs,

stripped bare, having left behind every companion

and the bodily cloak, soon to perish,

    فآنسها لطفاً وقَربَّها منّا

    until they came through His door, humbly submissive;

then He soothed them with kindness and graciously drew them near.

And the veils before His splendor were lifted,

and mountains long made a dwelling were leveled.

Then in awe they glorified the Unique One, the All-Watching,

and without words the meaning dawned upon its hearer,

through tongues of their state, ever eloquent,

to loose them forever in praise of His most beautiful names.

If indeed the coolness of water makes life sweeter

to the thirst-scorched liver, my life in Him is sweeter still.
